Black screen w/blinking cursor

Toshiba A-205, 13 months old, Vista Home Prem. After entering password from hibernation, saw brief blue screen dump then black screen. I had PGP encryption installed as required by my company and had to have it removed just to try to boot into safe mode. No luck, still only see Toshiba start up screen then black screen with cursor blinking in upper left corner of screen. PGP tech suggested starting up with original Vista CD, but if I do so, it reformats the hard drive and all data is lost.

Just saw a post on PGP.com about problems

Known incompatibility of PGP 9.9.x and the hybride energy saving feature of Windows Vista.

Is this relevant? You have probably lost everything

So.. you can select safe mode? Or you turn it on and it is resuming into the blank screen?

If the latter. Unplug the power, pull the battery out for 20 seconds or so. Then put it all back together and try booting up.

It said "hibernation locked" on

When they go into hibernation, they usually require your password to get back to normal operation. If it is forced to crash, damage to the system files will occur and that means starting in safe mode, if you can get to it. If you cannot get to the recovery partition I would use your recovery disks that you made when you first got the laptop and let it fix Windows for you automatically.

When I turn my Toshiba A45-S151 laptop on, I first get the screen that shows the Toshiba logo and has the four icons under the logo. Usually the next screen is black, has a cursor in the top left corner,...

That blinking cursor is the way in which the BIOS is telling you that Windows is not loading because its most critical, core files have been corrupted beyond repair. The only thing you can do is to reinstall using the recovery cd or your own Windows install disk.

You need your Vista disk to re-install Vista.

If you don't want to go to the expense, download and install Ubuntu, its a free opterating system and now on version 10.4, its pretty good.

Key board not working

It's a hardware issue,
Maybe RAM or hard drive..

Did you get it used? If so the password was set b4 you purchase it, and will not show up when you type,,,It stays hidden.

Your getting this screen because there is a hardware failure. Fix the problem and you wont need the BIOS password.

Press<esc> to enable startup message, This should give you more info on the problem.

Toshiba Satellite A135 laptop

Try disconnecting power adapter and removing battery for two minutes. If the laptop still does not boot then there is an hardware problem. You can try taking out and putting back ram modules, but my suggestion is to take the laptop at a repair shop, if you cannot fix it by removing battery.

Laptop screen turns black

In Windows XP you can disable hibernation by doing the following:
1. Open Power Options in Control Panel
2. Select the Hibernate tab
3. Clear the checkbox for enabling hibernation
This doesn't work in Vista however because the GUI for Power Options has changed and doesn't offer the ability to disable hibernation. But you can disable hiberation in Vista from the command line if you use admin privileges. Here's how:
1. Press the WINDOWS key and type cmd into the Start Search box but *don't* press ENTER
2. Right-click on cmd in the Programs list and select Run As Administrator
3. Click Continue when the UAC prompt appears
4. Type powercfg -h off and press ENTER

IF this does not help write back.
