SOURCE: Shutter remains open

The problem could lie in the meter/speed dial unit or in the shutter itself. New parts are no longer available for that model. You may be able to find a good one on one of the auction sites or even Craigslist. A good used one would be less than a repair even if parts were on hand.

SOURCE: Nikon FE

TRy firing the camera in the M90 setting. If it fires properly, use the battery test switch. If the battery LED doesn't light up, replace the batteries (2 MS76 type). The FE requires healthy batteries to operate the shutter. If the meter is calling for a slow shutter speed (low light or lens cap still on?). If the batteries are good, but the shutter still won't fire normally in sufficient light, looks like you're in for a repair shop visit.

SOURCE: nikon FE shutter speeds problem

I don't know, but it's worth a try. I took mine to the camera store, because my shutter wouldn't even work anymore, even with fresh batteries in it. He again tried new batteries, and turned the shutter speed knob from Automatic all the way over to "B" for Bulb, and back to the Auto. Guess What! I haven't used the camera in 3-5 years because I thought it was broke and going to need factory repair. Well, this tricked worked for me. I was so thrilled, because my daughter wanted some double exposures and special filters shots for her wedding. Also the weight of the camera I couldn't handle anymore with a health problem, so I went to digital, but would love a Nikon good digital.
Good Luck!

SOURCE: Nikon FE film winder jammed.

Is it the viewfinder or the film advance lever? If the viewfinder is not showing any image and the shutter is not getting released, then it could be a problem with the mirror box.To confirm, remove the lens and see if it gets released. To align the lens, you have to take it to the nearest service center (or repair shop).

Old Program A camera -mirror jammed in open position and shutter will; not open when the shutter release butten is pressed

From what you've given, it sounds like the shutter is fried, or the mechanism jammed - or both. If you're wanting to keep the camera, and use it, you'll need to contact a repair technician and have them take a look at it for a repair estimate - assuming it's able to be repaired. Estimates will run you around $35 most places, if there's no shop near you KEH Camera which has a website is quite good.

The same thing just happened to my Nikon FE, and my estimates have been ranging anywhere from $105-145 to get it fixed, so the decision of whether to repair or replace if really left up to you.

My film advance seems to be stuck. I took the film out of the camera and it still will not move. Does this have anything to do with the battery?

No, the only thing that the FE uses the battery for is the light meter and shutter. You can operate it completely without the battery using the M90 and BULB shutter speed settings.
Your film advance problem is a mechanical problem - check for any small objects that may be jammed into the film transport mechanism. If nothing is obviously causing a blockage, then the camera will need to be serviced.

Shutter won't open and film won't advance

You might have a dead battery. Check that.

Shutter

This is a fairly common problem with Nikon FE . It is usually caused by poor connection ( usually dry joint ) between the light meter board ( all of this is just under the top cover on the right hand side and the top cover is quite easy to remove ) and the shutter and you fix it by resoldering all the connecting wires between the two.
