In most surround sound systems the sub woofer is powered separately and uses a standard RCA coax connection to the receiver/amplifier.
Replacing is simply plugging in the new and reconnecting the coax cable.
Usually the audio signal is Dolby Digital 5.1 the (.1) is the LFE Sub-woofer. The connection is between the Subwoofer RCA connector on the amplifier and connects to the (LFE-Line) in on the subwoofer speaker.
Either the sub woofer speaker or the sub woofer amplifier section circuit has the fault. Contact any service technician to make diagnosis the faulty section. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
Circuit diagrams of many popular brand devices are given. Search the site by type in the "brand name" of your device, in the "Search box at the top right of the display window of the Homepage" to get gathered related posts.
H?, You have a very good system...one of the best of SONY..SUB does not get activated automatically especially on STEREO mode.DIRECT STEREO Notes • No sound will be output from the subwoofer. .your system has Dedicated Power Amplifier for 2 Externally Driven Sub-Woofers (200W RMS x 2)..in order to activate the sub woofer amplifier you need to make a selection on the surround modes while you are switching the modes of the surround you will see the speaker position on the display of receiver as well..if you do not see the sub woofer it wont be activated..Sound Field Program (A.F.D) is a good example to test it.. Take care and please Remember to rate/vote and give me 4 Thumbs Up for Helping out the Community :) Hope this helps! -------------------- Additionally please follow the instruction on your user manual to activate the SUB ,as is follows.. ----------------- BASS-OUT
Low-frequency (bass) signals can be directed to the
subwoofer and/or the front left and right speakers
according to the characteristics of your system. This
setting also determines the routing of the LFE (low-
frequency effect) signals found in Dolby Digital or DTS
sources.
Choices: SWFR (subwoofer), FRONT, BOTH
• Select SWFR if you connect a subwoofer. LFE and
low-frequency signals from other channels are directed
to the subwoofer according to the speaker settings.
• Select FRONT if you do not use a subwoofer. LFE and
low-frequency signals from other channels are directed
to the front speakers according to the speaker settings
(even if you have previously set the front speakers to
SML).
• Select BOTH if you connect a subwoofer and you want
to output low-frequency signals from front channels to
both the front speakers and subwoofer. LFE and low-
frequency signals from other channels are also directed
to the subwoofer according to the speaker settings. Use
this function to reinforce low-frequency signals using
the subwoofer when playing back sources such as CDs.

Alright i had a chance to look over things, this is how you are going to hook up the sub. first we'll be connecting the surround sound unit to the sub woofer. surround sound unit sub woofer left front: positive (+) <-----to------------->(+) left speaker level in negative ( - )<- - -to- - - - - - ->( - ) left speaker level in
right front: positive (+) <-----to------------->(+) right speaker level in
negative ( - )<- - -to- - - - - - >( - ) right speaker level in
now that the surround sound unit is connected to the sub woofer you will need to connect the front surround sound speakers to the sub woofer. sub woofer front surround sound speaker left speaker level out (+)<-----to--------> (+) left front speaker left speaker level out( - ) <- - - to- - - - ->( - ) left front speaker
right speaker level out (+)<-----to--------> (+) right front speaker right speaker level out( - ) <- - - to- - - ->( - ) right front speaker
Alright now that the wires are all over the place and plugged in turn everything on and see how it sounds. let me know if everything is working as it should. if you need help with anything else or if something does not seem right please feel free to contact me via e-mail or phone Mark Woodring
A connectivity check could provide the solution, notice any wrong wire connections on device or any other devices requiring interconnection. The woofer would perform properly when the connections that provide current for woofing are approapiate
important notes
1. Trace the connection from Recorder or sound output to the woofer device
2. The wiring connections should be sound and video ouput into sound and video output into woofer.
3. The connections if any problems would be located at the stereo recorder or device producing the spund and video. Check the connections of wires on the recorder device ensuring rewiriing
4. finally, adjust the equalisers if any the buttoms could have been disbled by master switch hindering full blaster boost sound.
Press the surround button on the Philips remote to see if the subwoofer will begin producing noise - the surround button switches the mode from simple stereo to full surround. I would test the surround button while watching a DVD, because not every tv channel is going to even produce surround effects. Good luck!
Yes turing on the "A" speaker is required for the Onkyo, but that only turns on the 2 front speakers in the "A" speaker jacks.
You may also need to check and see if the Onkyo has a menu selection in the setup menu that will turn on the sub woofer output on the back of the receiver.
I have seen on countless occasions where people just have a hard time finding that sub woofer option on their receiver.
I do not have the manuals for this Onkyo, so I can not tell you the exact way to find it.
I have been repairing surround receivers since they have been on the market and beleive me, you are not alone in this situation.
Sometimes it seems like you need a Phd. in programming or something similar just to firgure out how to set one of these up.
The solution should be in your owners manual, with the problem then being, just where in the manual. Go slowly thru it paying the closest attention to anything about set up procedures.
I have also seen at times where the setup for the sub-woofer is not listed as sub-woofer, but as "LFE" (low frequency effect) . So keep your eyes open for that.
something else, your sub woofer may have an auto turn on. That means it will only turn on if it detects an input signal. Make sure yo uhave the volume up enough on the receiver to trigger that auto turn on if yours has one.
I would like to have been more help, but without the manuals I can only give you general type thngs to look for. These type of receivers are all so different and all so complicated to operate. The days of just turning on a stereo, selecting your source and turning up the volume seem to be over.
Let me know if you need any more assistance from me.
Dave
p.s. Very nice system you have, when you get the Kef working I think you are going to just love this system. and Onkyo has the best quality receivers in their price range.
i think uyou have to got to stereo mode and turn ion the subwoofer option. i have a h/k thats wart i had to do in evvery mode is designate the s/w. rating please
