I was mowing my lawn, turned the mower off, then got back on and cranked it. Cranked fine, but when I went to start mowing again, it won't move forwards or backwards.
I did earlier smell something like a belt burning or something, but I figured that it was someone burning something rubber...
The mower will start but when you engage to start mowing it does not want to go forward or backward. The belts seem ok what else could it be?The mower will start but when you engage to start mowing it does not want to go forward or backward. The belts seem ok what else could it be?

Check the drive belts first. and make sure the hydro release lever is in the correct position. If it is not- you can push the lawn tractor and have the rear wheels turn. It sometimes doubles as a "Forward" "Neutral" "Reverse" lever on other brands of lawn tractor.
The belts should be in their guides and pulley grooves- check to make sure it does not have a hidden break by having the engine off, and pulling on the belt.
Lastly, check to make sure the hydro itself is not out of oil or low on oil. It uses low viscosity "HyGard" oil. Capacity if you drain the old oil out and refill is 4.6 quarts. Look for a leak if the level is low.
If it still does not move, make sure the levers are set so you are in forward motion positions, and push- if the rear wheels move there is a problem in the hydro unit.
Something within the machine is discharging the battary, it does not sound like the engine is not charging, there is a tool called a negative shunt, it connects to the negative pole on the battary and enables you to connect a multi meter, this will tell you if there is a charge going out of the battary when the machine is switched off, you can then disconnect components to see which one is causeing the problem, a good mower shop should have such a tool .
Remove the center dust caps from the rear axles, start the tractor up
and put it in gear and observe the axles, if one of them is spinning
freely inside the wheel, you have lost the 1/4" square key that pins
the wheel to the axle. Replace the key and you can go back to mowing. Hope this helped Tim
