GPS switches on okay. The correct screens come up but as of today the GPS cannot get a signal. I last used the GPS 3 days ago and everything seemed fine, though I do recall some unusual screens popping up when I was fiddling around with it whilst driving and trying to set a new course. The messade that keeps repeating is: "Looking for a valid signal". I have a TOMTOM ONE 3rd edition

I had the same fault which corrected itself after a couple of months left in a drawer. I suspect it reset it self after the battery went completely flat. You could try removing the battery switching on and off a few times to remove any power still in capacitors and then refit battery. Then Reset
Think I have sorted the problem out. I read some of your readers' solutions and it was mentioned that it may be advisable to log onto the GPS update. So, I installed my disc which came with the pack and followed the instructions to download the GPS update (and also took the opportunity to download other updates which took some time). Anyway, used the sat nav this morning and so far, it appears to be working normally now and the signal comes on in seconds!
on the menu screen you should see exit at the top. when you click this you will get a screen to exit navigaiton as if to go to the mp3 player, from there click on setup and then gps reset.
if you have the genie lamp on the bottom left of the navigation screen then you have the old version, you can upgrade using these files and instructions:
As above- worked fine on Saturday- drove to London yesterday...nothing!
Have upgraded already. Restart makes no difference.
