In your situation I would :
open the minimax enclosure, and take the hd out, (just open the enclosure, not the hd itself), and then open your desktop and connect this hd as slave (I am guessing you have a desktop with IDE hd and that the minimax has an IDE hard drive in it.... or both your desktop and the minimax has SATA hard drives) and then when you turn on your computer you should be able to see your second hd as a partition and be able to see the info in there, yet if windows does not recognize it, that means your hd is useless., yet remember you have to change the pin on your external hd to be slave or auto detect, if you let it as master your computer won't boot, bout do not worry, after you unpluges the hd from your desktop everything will be normal
p.d.
shutdown and unpluged the power cord from your desktop when adding/removing the hd.
Well, when you connect it as Slave you do not need an external power supply, the hd should be connected inside the computer, to the IDE bus, and the power supply come from the PC power source.
And doing this you will know if the hd still works, and you will access the data in it.
But since you are using mac, you do not have ide, because it is power PC infrastructure. Sorry about that, I do not work with power PC

Test your PSU or replace it if your power supply units fan is not working your PSU is faulty
One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect/ boot up a computer hard drive
Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA
the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they are probably old and faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error
hope this helps

I appreciate your comments but I don't think you get the problem, also I have a mac mini as my main computer the minimax is a back-up drive.
Surely to get this hard drive to function as a slave or partition it needs a power supply?
Same deal. I was cleaning my desk, when to turn the MiniMax on and the blue light never came on, no fan, same exact issue.
