Fisher Paykel Elec. Dryer

Turned my dryer on today, heats great but started smelling. Found to not be turning the drum. Sound like its going but the clothes are not being tossed. Its not a dual direction. I think it turns clock-wise. I unscrewed the top and flipped it and there is one thin belt tightly in place around the drum. There was some type of fiber cord found wrapped around a corne area and it looks like that slipped from under the front rim of the drum. I don't know if it was once one piece around the entire rim or not. Its not now, if it was.

I had a friend/repairman look at the dryer. He manually turned the drum from inside, with the door open, before doing anything. When he turned it on, it worked. He said he suspected that would not be the solution but that it would soon go back to malfunctioning. Thus far, its still working fine. However, the door shutting turns it on, rather than having to push the start button, once its turned to the time. Only problem is you can't turn the dial with the door closed b/c it turns on/off/on/off getting to the mode I dry on.

Usually the belt is a single piece that wraps around the entire drum. The fact that you smelled something and that you feel the clothes are not being tossed tells me that the belt was slipping on the pulley of the motor that drives the drum. This will heat up the belt causing the smell. If the belt gets too loose, this will happen. I'd replace the belt, and I think you'll be back in action.

Fisher paykel elec dryer not heating

Check the following to address this issue.

1. No power to the dryer
Make sure there's power getting to the dryer. Check for tripped circuit breakers or blown fuses. An electric dryer uses two circuit breakers or fuses, and if only one of two is tripped or blown, the dryer might still run but not heat. Sometimes the power cord disconnects or burns at the dryer, if this is the case, the wiring and the terminal block must be repaired or replaced.

2. Heating element
A burned out heating element will show no continuity when measured with a meter. Replace the element if found defective.

3. Thermal fuse
Most dryers have a thermal fuse, which burns out when the dryer overheats, in which case the dryer will either not run at all or stop heating. The fuse is usually located on the vent duct, inside the dryer. A blown fuse will show no continuity when measured with a meter. Before replacing the fuse, make sure the blower wheel is not broken or clogged, and there is nothing blocking the venting.
