Hello all,
I've had this player for a little more than a year, but have only logged about 20 hours or less on the VHS player. Tonight I tried to play a VHS tape on it and it quit playing after 5 seconds. I called the 800 number for help, but the guy didn't seem to know what the problem was and couldn't fix it. The two things he had me try were:
unplugging the unit, pressing the power button 10 times while unplugged, plugging it back in and wishing...which didn't work.
turning the power off, then powering on while holding down the VHS eject button, which did nothing, including not powering on.
The VHS player worked fine last week when I used it for about a half hour. The DVD player worked fine tonight and continues to work fine. The sound is connected to my theater system and has no problems.
Specifically this is what happens... With the power either on or off I insert a VHS tape. If the power was off, the unit turns on. After a brief loading period the tape begins to play. After 4 or 5 seconds of playing, the tape stops and the unit shuts off. When I power the unit back up it spits out the tape.
The fast forward and rewind functions both work fine in stop mode. In play mode, when I fast forward it has the same problem. After 4 or 5 seconds (real time, not elapsed play time on the counter) it shuts off.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sonds like you nailed the problem. i rated it 3 because i don't know if it's solved or not as i'm not mechanically inclined enough to vemture in there myself. thanks for the help!sonds like you nailed the problem. i rated it 3 because i don't know if it's solved or not as i'm not mechanically inclined enough to vemture in there myself. thanks for the help!

Yes, I have the same problem except the unit also gives a chattering sound when turned on and the tape is not in. Also it has a hard time accepting the tape like something is trying to block it. My unit is only 13 months old and barley used. Funai doesn;t seem to want to do anything to help. They claim their warranty is only 12 months and I Contacted them exactly 13 months to the day by fax and phone. I believe the unit has a manufacturing defect and needs to be reengineered. Where does the Uniform Commercial Code Stand on this?? Shouldn't the warranty be mandated at 36 months?

My device was loading the tape and going stand-by after few seconds. After 3 days of checking everything, mechanical, signals, belts, etc, it was a faulty capacitor in the power supply, inducing a high parasite signal about 15kHz on all components
Hi,
Based on your post/description, sounds like a mechanical problem with the take-up spool.
As this would involve mechanical diagnosis and repairs, your best bet may be to seek the services of a qualified professional.
Should you want to venture do-it-yourself, you need to remove the top cover and expose the inner mechanism of the VHS tape player. Of course the usual safety precautions when working with electrically powered devices. Once the inside mechanism is exposed, you will notice that there are 2 spools where the tape would be sitting when fully loaded. The right side is the take-up spool responsible for winding the tape when played or fast-forwarded. When fast forwarding during stop-mode it is direct gear driven however during play and fast-play, the take-up spool is driven by a clutch sandwiched between the top portion and the bottom wider portion. You need to disassemble the take-up spool. It may be held in place by hard press, force-fit, lock or retaining clip. Normally there is a spring near the top. Upon disassembly, you will notice the clutch which is a white fabric/cloth/cotton appearance. This has to be replaced. Probably available in eBay. In my location, such spare part is not readily available and we have to make do with work-around (not necessarily technically right but as long as it works and for your info only). Things we try:, Stretch the spring, the idea is to put more pressure on the clutch when assembled back; roughen the contact portion where the clutch mates with the spool assembly; worst case scenario, forget the clutch, dab a drop of rubber adhesive on both sides of the clutch.
In certain models/versions, it is possible that a slipping belt is causing the problem. In some instances, it could be the driving motor.
Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turn up or should you need further information.
Good luck and kind regards.

I had the same problem. We watched a DVD, and the unit worked fine. We went out for ice cream, came back, and decided to watch a VHS. Instead of taking the VHS, the CST.IN light flashed and the unit cut off after a few seconds. We didn't have a VHS in the unit at the time. After cutting the unit back on several times without success, I looked online for solutions. One person said to hit 'eject' 5 times in a row, but that didn't work for my unit. Someone else said there was a lever inside near the power button that ejected the VHS, so I checked that out next. I washed and dryed my hands well, and used my finger to jiggle the white lever. Then I saw that the tray that the VHS sits on wasn't all the way forward, so I gently pulled and pushed it. I'm not sure which of the two actions worked, but my light is now a steady green and my unit is working fine now. I am so glad because we've had this unit for almost 10 years now, and I really didn't want to have to buy a new one! Good luck!

So after calling a tv repair guy and listening to him tell me about how it is probably something to do with the transistor and it will cost me about 150 dollars to fix ( which I could buy a new tv for that price since it is only a 19 inch) I decided to look online at this issue of turning off after 5-10 seconds. I read about it being an issue with the VCR sensor, so I don't know about it being some LED that you have to replace because I just messed around with a VHS and moving the little white bar thingy on the right just inside the door for the VHS around a bit, and Voila it started working right again. I think maybe my son tripped something by sticking things in there and whatever I touched fixed it. So my advice is to just stick a VHS in and take it back out a few times and play with a few things inside and to the right. It didn't take long for it to work for me.
Hello, Use the witeView Mode or fraction mode 20000s /3600s/h gives 5 full hours, remain 2000 seconds, 2000s/60s/h gives 33 minutes remain 20 seconds. Result is 5h 33 min 20 sec Do not confuse the DMS degree, minute, seconds with th hour minute seconds.
I am currently have the same problem . I just got off the phone with the support tech and he suggested unplugging TV for about 5 minutes and if that doesnt work to unplug TV for about 2 hours. He said that may reset the TV . I am waiting now. If it works , I will leave feedback.
