Not necessarily true. This problem is generally caused by dirt or sand getting into the lens worm gear. Try these in order: 1) turn off the camera, remove the flash card and batteries, then reinsert them. 2) turn the camera on and off with the AV cable inserted, 4) rap the camera with the palm of your hand, 5) gently pull on or push close the lens then try to restart. If all the above has not worked, AND if the A4XX camera is no longer under warranty, AND if this problem did not result from the camera being dropped, here's how to fix it, and it's relatively easy: http://homepage.mac.com/jpelling/page0/page0.html By the way, don't know Justin, but he did a very nice job showing how to open the camera case and clean out the grit and sand from the camera lens drive gear. Make sure you send him an email to thank him

SOURCE: restarting the camera

this would be because there is something stuck in the lens..could be the rubber protection stuck not enabling your lens to pop bback into position.i tried gently tapping the lens an gently twisting it to enable movement in my lens

SOURCE: fuzzy horizontal line on picture

yes i have the same problem now..... the thing is that the camera is over exposed. ie the shutter doesnt close immediately, so during day time or good light, lot of light comes into the sensor. try this out to confirm the error.... if the problem is with shutter, then there will be no problem while shooting a movie... because for this the shutter is always open...i think we have to get it serviced :(

SOURCE: How can I install my Cannon Power Shot A420 on

If your camera is not relatively new and you're running Vista, Vista may have problems seeing it. Unfortunately, this can't be corrected as Canon did not update the drivers for many of its older cameras to run under Vista. But there exists a good, if not better alternative way to download your photos. Please don't take the following as a sales pitch as it's not, but please see this blog article, as it describes the use of an inexpensive card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue:

SD and Mini SD memory cards has a small slide switch on the edge of the card, which write protects data on the memory card or add photos to the SD card. Slide the switch from the LOCK position to the UNLOCK position, which is furthest away from the contacts.

Hallo, my canon powershot A420 camera shows horizontal white lines in LCD screen mostly in night shots and the day light shots appear blurred as if more light is entering and the image is not clear.

I am afraid this seems to be a hardware error in the sensor. If the image is purplish in color when blurred it is similar to my and another user's problem. He/she contacted the manufacturer and they said they can fix it for $250. I am not a repair specialist so there may be a simpler cause and solution- good luck.

Problem with canon a420 digicam

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

Note that your camera will not be able to take 15 second exposures, as per the above "fix". Instead, place the camera in manual mode, turn off the flash, and take the exposures in a darkened room. This should give you a couple seconds, just enough time to open the battery door while the red and yellow lights are flashing.

Timed shots/canon s45

1. Press the WB / Func button.
2. Scroll down to the Drive Mode icon (usually a single rectangle)
3. Scroll over to select the Clock/2 or Clock/10 icon (2 second or 10 second delay)
4. Press Set (on the multicontroller button)

Now, when you press the shutter button, the camera will delay 2 or 10 seconds before taking a picture.

To return to normal, follow the steps above, but select the rectangle icon (single shot) in step 3.

You can download a manual (Camera User Guide) for your camera here.

Elaine, did you accidentally hit the "Disp." button on the back of your camera (upper left button, just below the mode selection wheel). This button turns the LCD screen on or off while taking pictures to save batteries.
