SOURCE: lawn mower troubles

You must first remove the cover assembly which houses the starter pulley. Pull the old rope completely out until it no longer moves. Hold the starter pulley and remove the old rope. Try to wind the starter pulley spring tighter if possible. DON'T LET GO. The starter rewind spring must be wound before installing the new rope. After winding the spring, thread the new rope through the cover and into the hole in the pulley. Tie a good knot in the end and let the rope wind slowly into the housing. Once you have this done, replace the cover, get the proper length of rope, thread it through the handle, tie a knot in this end and your ready to go.

Check govner rod Assembly. If it has its springs intact than more than likely the govner is broken inside motor.

My john deere push mower starts fine mows for 10 min quits wont start so I took the the gas cap off looked at it put it back on push the prime bulb 1 time it started ran for 10 min quit did the gas cap...

I'm not sure of the model number of your mower or engine to know the fuel and carburetor set up. I do have one easy thing to try though as it sounds as if a vacume is building up in the tank. Try putting a half of tank of gas in it, leave the gas cap off, and see if it continues as it was or if it runs ok. If this stops the issue your cap vent is pluged up. I hope this helps

The lawn mower will start but after about ten seconds it quits. Then it is hard to start up again.

I looked up your engine in the mower parts manual below: (232kb)
http://www.oscar-wilson.com/MANUALS/POULAN/96112008300.PDF
The engine number is: 10T802-1098-B1 vs EA

The ENGINE operators manual is here: (7.66mb & not much help)
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/document/index.aspx?doc=277038WST_J_LO.pdf

The engine parts list is here:
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/engines/shop/parts-and-accessories/illustrated-parts-lists/?modelnumber=10T802-1098-B1
Open the diagram carburetor controls fuel supply and governor spring or use this parts manual link to download the engine parts pdf file: (Best!)

Either the primer bulb item 976 has a pin hole in it or... the diaphragm item 394 has a pin hole in it.
Given the cost of both parts I would replace them both and send you on your merry way if you brought it to me for repair.

There are 2 part numbers for the diaphragm. 795083 (Most models) and 796478 used on type 156 models. The type number is usually on the air shroud near the spark plug.

The primber bulb 694394 is common to both engine types.

As I mentioned earlier one of these items has failed. I recommend you replace them both and your mower will run fine. ( The gas tank and carb have to be removed as an assembly before you can change the carb diaphragm once the tank is removed.

Engine quites

Next time the mower quits, immediately unscrew the gas cap and try to restart it. If it runs straight away without a cap, you've found the problem - a clogged gas cap vent.

Clean the vent and you'll be able to run with the gas cap in place.

Good luck !

Craftman lawnmower start and turn off and do not stay running .

your carb needs to be rebuilt. there is a rubber seat that swells over time and then your float will not allow any gas through. so it will start and run briefly when you prime it. take it to a mower shop for a tune-up.
