This is the case with SLR cameras. When you look through the viewfinder you are looking at what the lens sees through a mirror/prism/lens system and the 'image' does not get to the capture device until you press the release. Then the mirror lifts and the image impinges on the CCD. There are a few camera that allow you to do both but this is not one of them.

This feature is called "Live View" and the K100D does not have it.
If you want this feature, you have to buy one of the more recent digital SLRs such as the Pentax K20D (NOTE: I don't think the K200D has this feature) or the newest Canon Digital Rebel, whatever model its up to.
Or . . .
You can simply take lots and lost of pictures and hope that one turns out that you are happy with.
That's what the old professionals used to do with their film cameras and no digital preview (before or after)! <grin>
Take care & Happy Imaging!

SOURCE: Pentax K100D will not power up
First make sure you are using fresh lithium batteries. These cameras indicate low batteries quite early on. Rechargeables even when freshly charged are marginal.
If the problem persists remove the batteries. Set the camera switch to the off position. Set the focus switch to manual. Wait at least a minute. Then replace the batteries and switch on again.
Operating with low batteries can confuse the firmware and it may be stuck in a low-battery loop. If this is the case this should reset the camera by allowing the electronics to power-down completely.
If this does not work you wiil have to contact pentax support.
SOURCE: won't turn on even with new batteries
Clean the battery contacts inside the camera with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.
SOURCE: Won't focus or take picture
Try cleaning the contacts on the camera body with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.
