SOURCE: Acer Aspire 1640Z BIOS problem

Dear all,

I also posted this one under "Notebook Bios Problems" which might notbe the correct place. Anyway here it is for you to see and maybe youcan learn from my experience.

-->

Have done a VISTA upgrade with Acers upgrade DVD.
It recommended to upgrade the BIOS - after doing this notebook is dead.
(1 long and 2 short beeps).
If I want to flash a new BIOS with Crisis method which BIOS shouldI use i.e. how do I know if I need the AT or UMA version - how toverify this on the notebook (my version is 1642 ZWLMI)?

I would very much appreciate some help on this - thank you

LATEST NEW - it WORKS AGAIN:
I was a little bit worried when I started icon_sad.gif but later I was all smiles icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif

So a BIG thanks to everyone who posted possible solutions here in this forum:

1: I bought a NEC model UF0002 USB floppy Disk Drive Unit.
2: Downloaded the zip file from the ACER homepage with the BIOS
(chose the one that should be the correct version for VISTA:
It contains 2 WHP files: ZL9A3A24.WPH and ZL9I3A24.WPH as I
learned from NoClaim's post I chose the ZL9I3A24.WPH.
3: Downloaded the zip files with the Crisis recovery zip-file (See d0gi's
post: http://www.rechner.org/b1800.html ).
4: un-zipped the files
5: copies the file ZL9I3A24.WPH into the crisis directory - deleted the
BIOS.WHP that was allready there. And renamed ZL9I3A24.WPH
to BIOS.WHP.
6: ran the WINCRIS.EXE program (did an unbootable format of the floppy)
7: I now had a recovery floppy.
8: all steps above obviously done on my desktop PC.
9: removed battery from my ACER 1640Z laptop
10: unplugged powercable.
11: inserted the USB floppy in one of the USB ports on the laptop
12: pressed the <fn> and <esc> keys
13: plugged the powercord
14: Turned on the laptop
15: waited a bit - lights came on on the laptop (no beeps)
16: waited a little longer and the light on the floppy came on
17: waited still a bit longer until I could hear the floppy was working
and then I let go of the keys <fn> and <esc>
18: after a while there was no activity on the floppy any more and
shortly after the laptop shot down.
19: the laptop started up again on its own and IT WORKED
20: THE LAPTOP IS BACK AND THANKS TO ALL OF YOU I SAVED A LOT
OF MONEY icon_lol.gif

SOURCE: Bios reset on a acer aspire 1640z

To reset the bios in a laptop you need to unplug the power supply and remove the battery. Once you do that press and hold the power button for 45 seconds then put the battery back on and plug it in and then try starting it. Everything in the bios will be reset to the factory.
Good Luck

SOURCE: acer aspire one 1640Z XP BIOS RECOVERY WON'T READ USB WITH BIOS

if I understood correctly you have the recovery software loaded on a stick flash drive and you want to boot from usb to restore the pc .....There are a few things that you have to know about to do that ...
first you have to go to bios and enable boot from another device ....other than hdd /cd or flopy ... for some elder bios this isnt even a choice ..or ..if it is ,,it will be as a sub options into the hdd...choice ..
another thing that you have to keep in mind ..is that you have to disable the other options to force it boot from this one ...or ....to press f8 on boot and manually choose the usm or the stick name that will appear on boot devices...
the most important thing is that if you already formatted the hdd it does notr have a usb driver loaded and that why willl not see the device ...also the device you are using to boot ...has to be specially formatted to be bootable ....this is made ussualy with a hp format tool ...and it is explained in more than one places on the net ...just look for making a boot-able stick (usb device)
in short ...make sure the sticvk is boot-able ...second the pc ha s teh capability to boot from another device ...and this is a feature that you already enabled like first boot device ...
than things will be easy ...it will ask you to press any key to boot from the usb ...and continue like an installation from the cd ...
if you cannot do it ...I recommend using a cd ..or an image that you will ***** in a virtual cd ...for those that do not have cd drive ( use daemon tool )

Aspire one d257-13473 wont factory reset

Windows key > All programs >Acer Empowering Technology>eRecovery management>Restore>Factory(Top of list)..

Or

If computer will not boot.
Tune computer ON
When Acer splash is on screen hold Alt and keep pressing F10...

Select factory from top of list.
You will need a password , the default is "000000" (Six zeros).

Recommend you use the first option if you can...
1. Power on the machine.
2. At the ACER BIOS screen, hold the "Alt" key and press the "F10" key simultaneously to start Acer eRecovery. The window of opportunity is very small, so this may take a few attempts.
3. Once eRecovery has loaded, click "Restore to Factory Default Settings" (the password is six zeros, 0.0.0.0.0.0.).
4. Click "OK" to continue.
5. From here, the eRecovery process will update all the data on the C: drive and restore the factory image (approximately 10 minutes).
6. Once eRecovery has run, press "OK" to reboot unit.

***This will erase all your unsaved data!***

Or

Running System Recovery from Windows

1. Click Start>All Programs>Acer Empowering Technology.
2. Select Acer eRecovery Management.
3. Select Restore (bottom of eRecovery screen).
4. Select Restore system to factory default (the password is six zeros, 0.0.0.0.0.0.).
5. Select Yes then Next, the system will reboot and start the recovery.

Or

1. Reboot, and press F8.
2. Select Repair.
3. Select Reinstall Windows and follow prompts.

***This will erase all your unsaved data!***

Need to locate the jumper for the cmos battery on an acer aspire one d257-1417

If you cannot locate the jumper or there isn't a jumper to reset the BIOS (CMOS) back to the defaults then remove the BIOS battery for 20 mins. The battery charge on the BIOS will disappear and when you insert the BIOS battery back into the laptop the BIOS settings will be back to the factory defaults.
You need to go into the BIOS setting to set the Date and Time etc.
