In this case the laser for the dvd has died. This can't be fixed, you must replace the entire drive - a new dvd-rw will cost you less than $30.

i ran into this problem a while ago. I had to test different dvd's. I then looked on the manufacturer's website. there they stated which dvd-r, dvd-rw would work. once i tried that brand It worked fine.

sounds like your laser is bad it usauly happends to laptops if you burn alot of cds or dvds or time took its toll the infirior laser is not designed fto last forever you must replace the drive! Good luck!

use a lens cleaner and clean the lens of the optical drive. this will help ithink.

If you have the sony CD RW DVD ROM then you can't burn the data in a blank DVD.

Because your Configuration is :
Read : CD / DVD
Write : CD

This means you have a combo drive. But to burn a DVD you should have DVD RW.

change the cables of dvd drive, also check power

How many CDROm drive installed on your PC? The message appear when you burn a CD or just only reading the content?

Hi, A couple of possibilities: With a known good DVD with files inserted into your Compaq CR-589, double click in your My Computer, double click in your CD/DVD. 1. If it opens and displays the content, then there is nothing wrong with your DVD but the auto start feature of your OS was disabled, enable auto start; 2. If in My Computer or in Device Manager, the DVD doesn't show up, then it can be hardware problem, IDE/power cable problem, bios did not recognize DVD device, replace if and as needed; 3. If the DVD is in My Computer but will not display the files or contents, possibly defective DVD, replace. Hope this worksa out for you. Pls post again how things turn up. Good luck and kind regards.

1.Please cheack weather the DVD meadia is DVD R/W combo drive, 2.Then only the DVD media will be Burn or write tO the Blank dvd media & then check weather the blank cd is a dvd r/w cd.
