Hi there my Belin N1 works fine from my laptop but not from the PC. The Belkin Support centre advised the USB port needed upgrading and they could not help further... Can you assist?

I use a belkin N1 modem/router and usb adaptor and it was a problem child with drop-outs, on Vista HP. It now performs much better, since switching security to WEP 128 bit. I'd use higher security but one wireless card can't handle it.
Incidentally, the Belkin performs well on non-Belkin G level cards.

Hi, A couple of things: 1. Have you tried all the USB ports of your desktop PC (front and back)? 2. What is your desktop PC brand/model or at least the motherboard? and What OS please?; 3. If running Windows in the desktop PC, can you please check in your Device Manager if your USB are 2.0? 4. Are you using a USB hub or directly connected to the PC's USB port? Hope this be of some idea/help. Pls post back with your desktop brand/model/motherboard. Good luck and kind regards.

I have to ask, were the drivers installed on the desktop PC too?
If they were, perhaps you can try and uninstalling them. Thereafter, reinstall and follow closely the installation procedures. There are some models that require that you do not plug in the USB Wireless Adapter not until the installation requires you too. The procedure may also ask you to reboot. In some cases, Windows will report that your driver/installer files has not passed Windows testing, just click on "Yes" or continue.
If that doesn't work, power down and reboot with the USB Wireless Adapter plug into a port.
If you need copy of the driver/manual, it is available online at "http://www.belkin.com/support/".
If still a no joy, pls post back with any messages from Windows. Also your motherboard brand/model, something like Asus A7S333 or ECS K7S5A (normally shown after power on before Windows start).

The info on the motherboard brand/model would give us:
1. info on USB features. There might be known issues, patches, update for your motherboard;
2. "AMD Athlon (tm) XP 2000+ 1.67GHz" suggests that the desktop was assembled in 2002-2003 where USB 1.0 was still the norm and 2.0 was just coming up;
Another query is have you installed SP2 to your XP?

hmmm, this has something to do with Windows Wireless Config - On WinXp, let's check if your Wireless Config is Enabled:
1.To access this service, you can navigate to the Control Panel, then Administrative Tools and finally double-click on Services**.
2.From the services window you will want to scroll to Wireless Zero Configuration and right-click on it, then click Properties.
3.From the Service Status area choose Start to start the service.
4.From the Startup Type drop-down menu, choose Automatic so that the service starts up the next time you start Windows XP.
5.Alternatively, you can launch Windows Run, type services.msc and click OK.
May I ask how you downloaded to the desktop the beta drivers?

Should not be under USB but rather Networking adapters.

Try right click and "Update Driver", No, not this time, Install the software automatically.

Re the motherboard. Based on the info you gave me, the possibility is a Microstar MS-6380E Pro. There are several versions of this motherboard:
KT3 Ultra/ Ultra-ARU

One of the original BIOS was in 2002-02-28 version 5.1; one of the latest BIOS is 2003-02-24 version 5.7. There are a total 7 versions/revisions. Of course, presumably the best would be the latest. The BIOS would be dealt with following your response to exact model of motherboard
Pls find out the exact model, version number and date by doing the Pause/Break again. It normally is shown on the 3rd or 4th row/line of the screen/display where you saw the "62-0710-009999..."
In the meantime, pls try the following:
1. Powerup the desktop, boot to Windows, go to Device Manager and uninstall the Belkin or Unknown Device. Likewise uninstall all the USB instances (USB Hub, Host Controller, Composite Device, Root Hub & everything under the USB);
2. Do not reboot;
3. Go to Start, Run, type "regedit";
4. In Regedit, click on File, Export, in File Name, pls type "001", "Save", it will take a moment to backup/save your registry in file 001.reg. then click on Edit, Find, in the Find windows type "Belkin", click on Find Next;
5. Every time a Belkin entry is found press "Del", click on Yes. After every deletion, press F3, and repeat process. Repeat till Windows says "Finished searching through the registry." The idea is to completely remove any Belkin info/entry in your PC. This way we will be assured of a clean/fresh install and hopefully no conflicts.
6. Reboot the PC. Press "Del" to enter the BIOS/CMOS setup. Arrow down/right to "Load BIOS Setup Defaults, "Y", enter, press"Esc" once;
7. Arrow down to "Integrated Peripherals", Enter, Verify/Make "USB Controller" - "All USB Port"; "USB Legacy Support: - "Enabled", press "Esc";
8. Arrow down/right "Save & Exit Setup", Enter, "Y", Enter, system will reboot;
9. Ensure that no USB devices are plugged in including the Belkin;
10. After booting, Windows will auto detect the USB ports, allow it to install all necessary drivers. This may take a little time. Verify that the USB ports are reinstalled and no problems in the Device Manager. Reboot;
11. If you have other USB devices (other than the Belkin), plug them in and check if working as before.
12. If no other problem, reinstall the Belkin. Load/install the drivers and go thru the process. When asked to plugin the Belkin do so but If it came with a mini-cradle and extensions USB cable, use that instead of directly connecting. it is preferable to use the USB port at the rear of the PC.

We have tried all USB ports, interestingly when we put into the usb combo, it recognises for the first 15 secs (ie lights up as connected on the USB comboo) then goes off and the PC delivers a message saying USB device not recognised.
The only USB port I can see if it is 2.0 is for the combo and it is 2.0.
The PC model is: AMD Athlon (tm) XP 2000+ 1.67GHz 512 mB of RAM
The OS is Windows XP
We have been trying both hub and port.

I have uninstalled the driver and then reinstalled.
It asks for you to insert the USB Network Adaptor and which ever USB port I put in it say:
USB Network Adaptor is not found. Insert your USB Network Adapter to activate the driver. Click OK to continue.
Then I click OK and I was asked to reboot which I did.
Then when I click on the Belkin icon on the desktop it does not open at all.
I just downloaded the beta update driver and this now allows me to open the wireless Networking Utility. however the adaptor is not picking up wireless.
For info (,ay not be relevant) in device manager it seems Belkin is showing as Unknown evice under USB Controller list. It keep s trying to refresh the list. (When I remove the Belkin USB Unknown edvice no longer displays) Then when I look at the properties (for unknown device) it sayd No Drivers are installed with this device)
Can you let me know how to get details on the motherboard. I think the PC was assembled in 2002-3.
More for info (may not be relevant!) the Generic USB Hub Location says USB 2.0 Hub) All the others say Location 0
Yes we have Service Pack 2 XP is version 2002.
