I would not try removing switches or anything else on your camera if you are inexperienced. You can really screw things up big time and then you will have a really big bill for the repair. I would advise you to go on the Nikon USA website and find the nearest factory repair depot and phone them for advice on this matter. You will probably need to send it to them for repair. They usually have about a ten day turn around. I don't know how you use your camera in your work, but if you must have a camera while yours is in for repair, you can rent one from Adaorama.com. They will ship it to you and then you ship it back at the end of the rental. I have been using them for years and they are very reputable.
I know I'm late to the response on this. However, there are two switches that need to be looked at. The first is on the lens that shows M/MA. It should be on MA for auto focus. The other is on the camera front. There is a switch for C/S/M. The C is for continuous auto focus, the S is for single auto focus, and the M if for Manual focus. Be sure it is not on the "M". On single focus, the camera must acquire focus before it will trigger. On C it will trigger without being in focus. On manual it will trigger at whatever focus you have manually set it for.

I assume the AF/M switch on the body is set to AF as well? This has not been mentioned but the D50 has two drive systems for AF.

Dan62, your camera will never be able to focus on objects with no contrast. The manual specifically states this. However, you can put the AF marker over something with some contrast, half press the shutter, so that it will focus, hold the shutter button halfway while you recompose the shot, and then press it all the way.
A note to others using the D40/D40X/D60 that are having problems with autofocus: please remember that this camera will not autofocus with mechanically driven lenses. It will only AF with "AF-S" or "AF-I" lenses.
