One easy trick is to change the default IP 192.168.0.1 to something else in addition to password protecting the login to the modem. Make sure you save the new IP address.

I want to find out how to secure my network. My neighhbours ar loggin in on because I pay for high speed access. The router is Belkin g Plus MIMO 180170

it depends on what you specifically want to password-protect: a. protecting the network from unauthorized users? b. protecting the network's admin interface?
for a. - log into your network's admin interface (usually http://192.168.0.1) - go to the category of wireless security - select the type of network protection you are looking for (strength - i.e. wep, wap, wpa2) and set your password following the steps listed within your router's admin interface...
for b. - log into your network's admin interface (usually http://192.168.0.1) - if you have never done this before, then your username should be filled in as Admin and leave password blank and hit enter.... from there, you are able to change or at least add a password to the interface from unauthorized access (usually under category security)

Alrighty then, So my problem is this: I am one of those people who enjoys the bending of technology to my will. as such I will hack, mod, and regedit as much as necessary to personalize my electronics....

Personally, I don't think there is a way to protect a winxp admin account from being hacked, because it's very easy to remove the password for admin (or any) account. When the password is removed, the hacker will gain full access to the computer.

Our router was set up years ago but now we want to password protect our wireless router how do I go about doing that

You need to access your router's admin interface. Each router brand uses a different default IP. For example, Netgear uses 198.168.0.1. You can easily Google your router brand for it's default IP. From a browser, go to your router's IP. You should see your router's login page. If you didn't change the defaults, the default user and password are usually admin and admin. Once logged in, you can protect your wireless transmissions with a password.

How do I get into my router to make it safe

based on your icon, you are using a d-link router. by default, d-link routers are accessed using a browser at IP 192.168.0.1. You can try this:

type http://192.168.0.1 in your browser like firefox or IE then you must be directed to your router's web-based setting. From there, you can explore and navigate to "Admin Password" and you should supply your password to protect it.

By the way, by default, d-link have no password at first use. If you are prompted for a password, try this:

user name: admin
password: <leave blank>

OR

user name: admin
password: admin
