Canon Digital Rebel XT: error 05

I had the sticking and two-clicks problem also. I manually pulled the flash up, then took a Q-tip dipped in standard rubbing alcohol and ran it over all the sliding mechanism parts of the flash. Then I rubbed the dry end of the Q-tip over it all agan and it now works fine.

I have some experience on this problem. CHECK THE FOLLOWING BEFORE SENDING THE CAMERA TO REPAIRING. When the flash unit pops up a lever sends a signal to the camera. Try to pop up the flash, CHECK THAT THERE ARE "two" PINS ON EITHER SIDE OF THE FLASH. A longer one just appears "behind" the latching hook ON THE "RIGHT" OF THE CAMERA. IF THE LONG PIN IS BENT, DOES NOT POP UP OR EVEN MISSING TO LEAVE IT A HOLE, THEN THAT'S THE PROBLEM. It can be "repaired" by one-self (like I had did so) but you have to learn to dissemble the back, the front and then the top cover. If you have some skills, then NO PROBLEM.

Solution #2 & #3 were right on the button!!! I had never noticed that ''small''round button on the left side.It was stuck flush with the body and just giving it a chance to come out and cleaning it was enough to get the flash and the camera working properly again.

I had this problem also and after reading the above post Iooked at the pins under the onboard flash and sure enough one was sticking from built up dust and sweat and gunk. I took a Q-tip with some mineral oil on it and kept cleaning around the pin and kept trying to get the pin free to move up and down smoothly. After about 15 minutes it was freed and the 'Error 05' was no longer a problem. The camera works perfectly once more. So if this is your problem - a pin sticking - try this cleaning before sending it in or disassembling the camera yourself. Thanks, Rick

I just had the same Error 05 message, right after cleaning my camera. I thought it was something I did while cleaning it. I called Canon and was sick to my stomach when they send I'd have to send it in. I know Canon makes a good product, but I had a previous bad experience with their service department and dreaded the thought of going through them, and money, and time without my camera again.

Determined not to mail my camera off, I found this website and all the helpful advice. Sure enough, the pin I never knew was there - was stuck half way and popped up when using rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip. Kudos to the website and the advice!!!

Pop up flash locking mechanism needs adjustment or to be replaced . You might be able to do this yourself but the top cover has to come off completely ( the mechanism I am talking about is on the inside of the top cover and is not expensive ). One reason for sending it in is that if the mechanism ( small electro magnet and the lock ) has to be replaced you will need spare parts and these are not freely available.

Hi.I looked at the suggestions above and it is easy...If you have a canon eos 350d with a flash error 05 message then simple manually lift the flash up.... it exposes the two sliding levers and the locking pin. . simply wipe them with lint free 'bud' stick or cloth and for good measure balst it with an air duster .. which you can buy in cans... it clears any dust or grime .. the mechanism then works perfect.. end of prob and no seneidng it away for expensive repairs.... if you ring canon uk up they will advise you to send for a repair... but its easy to do so do it yourself.. dont be heavy handed on the sliding pins when claeaning but they shouldnt bend easy... . its simple enough to do.. .

I was so skeptical this would work - it sounded too simple. A Q-tip with a little rubbing alcohol and 30 seconds later my camera worked! Wow, I was dreading another bill to fix my canon. Thanks for sharing and saving me a bill for a photo shop to take a look at it. I'm sure they charge a hundred fold to fix this simple do-it-yourself job!

As stated above, a Q-tip and a drop of rubbing alcohol. You can open the flash by holding the SIDES of pop-up flash unit. Don't pull up on the front, it won't work... you will understand why once you pull it open from the sides. My problem wasn't the pin, it was an itsy-bitsy tiny drop of sticky something. We last used it at the A's / Yankees game, so it could have been anything. A quick clean up with a Q-tip and a drop of rubbing alcohol, works perfect.

Hey thanks for the info guys especially the point about the long pin (switch) on the right side (if looking at the front of the camera) mine was pushed in or cruded up - cheers chansimon. I also cleaned the shorter pin (switch) under the hot shoe frame (the rails where you would connect a bigger flash)located (if looking at the front of the camera) on the left side of the hot shoe (see here for picture).

I would also like to mention that if your having problems getting the flash to pop up try taking the top plastic off the on built in flash (open flash and take three screws off) and grease all moving joints where friction could occur. When i say grease i mean very very very lightly, i used white door grease, use something that is going to stay there for awhile, something thick. Now i was still having problems getting it to work so i took the spring out and with needle nose plyers pulled on it just enough to make the spring a tad stronger. You know in the opposite direction. Becarefull doing this you don't want to warp the spring. I suggest grease first and play around with the alignment and tension of the screws before the spring method.

Anyway, thanks so much, i would have never have saw that second switch. You gotta love the net, eh!

Pull the flash up manually and spray some lubricant on the hinge, that worked for me.

I had the same '05' flash error and 3 clicks..googling the problem brought me here and I cleaned out around the flash with a qtip like suggested and guess what.. It works!!! Woohoo!!

I take photos at a local dirt track so I have no idea how it got so dirty (JK) but thanks to you guys I'm ready to back this weekend!

wow, didn't think this would work, but used a soft tooth brush to dust around under the flash and a tiny little ... very little pin sized pin :) at the very back left under the flash popped up!
it works now. The pin is so small you can hardly see it at the back there, but
it seemed to be stuck down inside and the soft tooth brush helped it pop back
up into place!
My camera is fixed! Thanks so much!!!!!

Just used the advice above... fabulous!
You can lift your flash up... just use both fingers on the sides and it comes up.
Then clean all around the lifting levers etc... And after many attempts and cleaning as suggested above, it is fixed. THANKS! just brilliant!

The problem is i cant even lift my camera pop up flash manually.... it is jammed!

I just cleaned the sliding mechanism and it was the small round pin on the left side. Thank you so much for posting your suggestion....I was a little scared there. I haven't had my camera for a year.

Thank you all so much! This is my brand new camera - and I thought I must have done something to break it yesterday. Q-Tip and a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol worked wonders. Now the flash pops right back up!

My problem is after turning the camera off then on again, it completely died. So I charged up the battery, took two pix and it died again. Recharged the battery, camera is still dead. Used a different battery, still dead. Not looking too good is it?

This solution was so simple, just a q-tip with rubbing alcohol to fix it. I was told this would cost me somewhere in the $200 range to fix for a 5 year old camera, I was thinking it was more worthwhile to purchase a newer model. Well, it only cost me a drop of rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. My pin did not pop back up after applying the rubbing alcohol so I lightly poked it with a small screwdriver and up it came. The pin should stick up above the housing of the camera about 1/8th inch.

On 450D, if you popup flash, there is a small black micro switch on the left hand side under where the flash rests when closed (Facing camera.) Using your fingernail, a gentle flick should release it so it pops up again. Other users have suggested alcohol and a q tip to remove any dirt that may have caused the switch to stay down. Either, way the switch should be in the 'up' position when the flash is open.
