all engines can stall
with modern engines, the PCM does everything in its power, to prevent stalls .
the top cause is bad spark plugs or bad spark.
if then engine make odd sounds,?
all engines the run too slow shake and make odd sounds.
if the sound is metallic, (think of Micky mouse with tiny hammer hitting a tin bucket) that be bad sound.
no engine stated,but if the sounds are bad, id not ever try to start it. or bend valves in the head. (4cylinder)
if you ignored the cam belt, and not service it (new one)
at the proper time , the engine either stalls, no damage
or with 4cyl yes, damage.
both the 2.2L gas and 2.2l diesel engines are interference engines.
if you told me what engine you have, I can give 10x better advice.
do not run the 2.2L if the engine sounds BAD.
or you make it worse.
hear a clicking sound,but bendix gear not engaging the flywheel,(bad Bendix),or you hear nothing but a spinning sound(bad solonoid switch,maybe you hear a dragging sound as if its losing power brushes ,or armature bad,or bad battery
