Will have to take apart chainsaw handle, and look for the parts that is out of whack/not lined up or not working. May have to replace a couple parts. Look for diagram of exploded trigger handle for all the parts.

SOURCE: stihl saw 026 runs 5-10 min won't stay running and backfires

5 to 10 minutes is a long time and the 026 is a fairly old saw. If it is running 5 to 10 minutes and not 5 to 10 seconds, you probably just have a worn engine. Clean the saw inside very thououghlr and try Amoco white gas. You should be able to reduct the heating and get more run time. A carb rebuild might also help some but in hot weather it is not unusual for chain saws to vapor lock.

Instruction on how to start a stihl chainsaw model 014 AV

this is a picture of a 014
looks basic..older model .. no safety features

starting all depends on
carby idle hi /low set correctly
air filter clean
clean fuel....fuel /oil mix
good spark
new spark plug if required
chain oil in oilier section
correct chain tension on the cutting bar

being a two stroke
and the engine has good compression
crank casing seals are in good condition

never have your body in line with the chain
it could run off the bar at startup ..flick .onto your arm or face

choke on
trigger lock on
hold the handle and pull cord handle ..firmly
let the weight of the chainsaw start itself
let the chainsaw go downwards till motor splutters
choke off
trigger lock on
drop the chainsaw downwards a few more times
and it should start

other way is put foot in the foot plate of the handle
and start sequence is the same

if not something is out of adjustment or needs servicing

Model 026. when trying to cold start, why does the compression button pop out without starting?

Its ment to.!!! that's the job of a decompression button.

Procedure:
1.push on off switch into full choke position, depress the decompression button.
2.pull the saw over until it 'fires' once.
3. the decompression button would have popped back up, click the on/off switch up to half choke.
4.pull saw over and it should fire up, revving.! blip the throttle to return it to tick over.

Hold cutoff saw firmly.
Pull starter handle until saw fires, it should then cut out.
Click the starter switch up 1 click to half choke.
Pull starter handle again until cutoff saw fires up. note: it will be reving because the trigger is loched on, (blip the throttle once) and it should go to tick over.

There should be np need to keep playing with the choke when the saw is warm. No need to lock the trigger when starting warm..

I also have a stihl chainsaw model home light 240. I just had it sharpened and a new spark plug put in by the repair guy. I used it for 30 mins and it kept stopping until I couldn't start it again

Starting procedure for Stihl.
(cold starting)

Place saw on floor (flat clear surface).
Make sure chain break is on.
Hold throttle in, while pushing on switch all the way down.
Place right foot in the flat of the rear handle.
Place left hand on top handle.
Pull starter handle until saw fires, it should then cut out.
Click the starter switch up 1 click to half choke.
Pull starter handle again untilsawfires up. note: it will be reving because the trigger is loched on, (blip the throttle once) and it should go to tick over.

There should be np need to keep playing with the choke when the saw is warm. No need to lock the trigger when starting warm.

Warm starting is performed by holding the rear handle between the thighs rather than on the floor.

remove the top cover on the handle, there is a screw in the bottom of the handle end. put the on off switch in the choke position all the way down, connect rod to throttle on carburetor then slip it into the hole in the trigger. replace operator presence lever making sure the spring is in the notch on the side of it, while holding it in place reinstall the top cover.
