Your printer has a built-in waste ink tank for the ink used during
print head cleaning. As time goes by, the waste ink tank gradually
fills. When the waste ink tank is nearly full, you should receive a
"Waste ink warning" error when you print. Press the RESUME button on
the printer to cancel the error so you can continue printing. Before
the waste ink tank becomes completely full, have the waste ink tank
replaced.
The ink absorbers are a set of rubbery pads that absorb the ink during the printer cleaning cycle. They can also absorb ink from borderless prints (where the ink goes out to the edges of the paper). Some of these pads are below where the print head goes when in standby mode. Additional pads are further down inside the printer.
To get at them, you need to disassemble the printer and it's a messy job to replace or clean them. The counter for the waste ink pad full is set to a value that usually should be reached near the expected end of life of the printer.
If the printer is still under warranty, contact Canon to have them deal with the problem and reset the printer.

Not all the ink that leaves the ink-cartridge gets jetted onto the paper; some of it is "wasted", and goes into the "absorber".
So, the software inside the Canon printer has mathematically predicted, given the number of pages you have printed, and the number of times that you've turned the printer off, that, statistically-speaking, the "waste ink absorber" is almost full.
Take the printer to a qualified printer technician, for replacement of the absorber, and to "reset" the electronics to "zero pages printed".
This printer will take either the PG-30 or PG-40 (larger size) cartridges for black ink, and either the CL-31 or CL-41 (larger size) cartridges for color ink.
