My maytag neptune front load washer won't unlock. I may have to replace the wax motor per so many other blogs. I may be able to get to it in two days. Meanwhile, I have expensive clothes locked inside my washer that I wish to remove so that they do not mold as the wash cycle began before the door locked on me. How do I unlock the washer so I can remove my clothes? Is there a manual means of superceding the lock?

To Manually unlock the door lock system:

1. Unplug the power cord from the outlet.
2. Remove the front lower kick panel.
3. Reach up along the inside of the front panel and locate the bottom of the door latch assembly.
4. Located on the bottom of the door latch assembly is a tear-drop shaped tab.
5. Gently pull the tab down about quarter inch or until a click is heard.
6. The door may now be opened.

My maytag MLE2000AYW will not lock, how hard is it to replace or fix?

I would be concerned about your door latch wax motor ( part # 12002535) though... See Neptune Help for more information about replacing the faulty wax motor with brown colored actuator tip before it damages your machine control board.
When the wax motor shorts out it will blow the Q6 triac and then the R11 resistor will burn and your door probably won't lock anymore as indicated by the door locked light not coming on. The next thing you will notice is that your clothes will be soaking wet after the wash cycle because the spin cycle will not work if the door does not lock...

Your machine control board is located above the dryer on the right side.

Every Maytag Neptune front loader with a timer knob (non digital) has a wax motor and all of them shipped with faulty one except the later 2000 series stacker models. You should proactively replace the wax motor with the new design (with black tip) to prevent the Q6 R11 failure on the control board. If you're too late you can try the STAGE 1 repair kit at the same site above.

To inspect your door latch wax motor on the stackers you:

  • Unplug machine
  • Remove the (2) screws holding center panel and remove panel
  • Remove the (1) center screw holding the top panel located inside compartment above washer
  • Remove the top panel to expose the door latch assembly

    I hope this helps you.

Maytag Neptune Front Load Washers Wax Motor Replacement

The wax motor needs to be replaced and the control board requires repair or replacement should your Maytag Neptune Front Load Washer fails to advance to the high speed spin cycle and the "door locked" light is not turned on. This is a common issue that led the filing of a class suit against Maytag Corporation in 2004. Disconnect power to the machine prior to servicing to avoid the risk of electric shock that can lead to physical injury, disability, and even death.

Access to the wax motor for replacement requires the removal of the front panel and the top cover. Once the two are removed, disconnect the wires from wax motor terminals then pry the spring clip off and take the wax motor out. Take note of the wax motor position before removing it from the door latch assembly to make sure you fit the new wax motor properly later on. One simple and effective way to do it is by taking a picture of the door latch assembly prior to removal of any component.

Fit in the new wax motor and make sure the shaft is properly seated into the slot provided on the latch axle and secure it firmly with the spring clip provided. Reinstall the top cover and the front panel back into position once the wax motor is properly installed.

Maytag Neptune Front Load Washers No Spin Problem

A class suit was filed in the State of Illinois, USA and then later on won against Maytag in 2004 due to the high failure rate of the wax motor used in the door lock mechanism of their Neptune Front Load Washers. The wax motor is used to activate the door lock switch by extending its shaft when a voltage from the machine control is applied across its terminals. Its failure then leads to the breaking down of components in the expensive machine control board. This is the fact that angered the customers which led to the filing of the class suit.

The obvious symptom of a failed wax motor is the inability of the washer to advance to the spin cycle and the door lock lamp is not turned on. The washer stops momentarily at the end of the wash cycle then continue to tumble as the machine control checks the activation of the door lock switch. The control will not allow a spin speed higher than 51 revolutions per minute (RPM) unless the door lock switch is activated by the wax motor. It is a safety feature of the washer to prevent accident due to accidental opening of the washer door during a high speed spin.

Customers who purchased the Neptune Front Load Washers in the USA after April 1, 1997 and before August 9, 2004 are Class members and eligible for the repair reimbursement, replacement cost, or purchase certificate depending on the length of service of the machine. Call up Maytag at 1-888-MAYTAG (1-888-629824) for more information.

The models included in the class suit are as follows: MLE2000AYW, MLE2000AWW, MLE2000AZW, MLG2000AWW (Gas Stack Unit), MAH3000AAW, MAH3000AEW, MAH3000AGW, MAH3000AWA, MAH3000AWW, MAH3000BGW, MAH4000AWW, MAH4000BWW, MAH4000AWQ, MAH4000BWQ, MAH5500AWW, MAH5500BWW, MAH5500BWW, MAH5500BWQ, MAH55FLBWW, MAH55FLBWQ, MAH6500AWW, MAH6500AWQ, MAH7500AWW, MAH7500AWQ, MAH7550AAW, MAH7550AGW.

Why can't I get the door to unlock?

you need to open the top cover and access the wax motor assembly door lock solenoid and from there you will see a plastic string in a loop to the left side of this area, this is a manual door unlock, then you need to replace either the wax motor that is part of the door lock mechanism or the control board or both
tip

Manual Door Unlocking of Maytag Neptune Front Load Washers

Maytag Neptune Front-Load Washers are equipped with emergency access cord that can be used to unlock the door when the door lock mechanism fails to unlock it after a wash load is done. The emergency access cord is located under the top cover and can be accessed through the dispenser bezel. Make sure that power to the machine is disconnected prior to servicing to avoid the risk of electric shock.

Remove the four screws securing the dispenser bezel to the top cover then lift the bezel off to access the emergency access cord. Carefully pull the emergency access cord steadily then open the washer door.

The pulling of the emergency access cord overrides the wax motor and the sliding gear is pulled from right to left away from engagement with the rotating gear. It allows the rotating gear to release the wire loop of the door.

The failure of the door lock mechanism to unlock the door is due to a failed wax motor in the extended position. This requires the wax motor to be replaced. Access to the door lock mechanism for the wax motor replacement requires the removal of the front panel and lifting the top cover. Click here for the detailed front panel and top cover removal procedure.

Shut the door and will not lock after given time which results in not draining or spinning. this is a maytag neptune front loading washer

It is probably the control panel on the washer. A common problem. You can actually repair it yourself with a kit and also you will need to replace the wax motor or you will have the same problem over and over. Once the wax motor is replaced it should not happen again but in the meantime you have two components on the control board which you can replace with basic soldering (sp) skills. You can actually view a free instructional video on line - if you search wax motor you will find the site
