Might be that the aperture is stuck and you need to get the lens repaired (might cost more than a new lens.) Or it might just be bad contacts. Clean the contacts and try another lens before asking Canon or dismantling the lens.

Have you tried cleaning the contacts? Taking out BOTH batteries? (There's a button cell as well as the main battery.) If you have a second lens you can test, i'd give that a shot first. Either way, probably need to have it replaced or repaired right away.

Finally, have you got the latest firmware version? The XS is currently at version 1.0.5, which was released in April of this year. You can download it here.

Also, could check this link: 50mm-lens-contact-points and the video, as reference...

The flat printed cables inside the lens unfortunately develop small cracks over the years and this causes the lens to fail. The repair is NOT easy, you have to tear down the lens all the way to it's base components and replace the flex cable on the aperture diaphragm. The cable and the diaphragm are available online, but again it's not a simple repair and most people should not attempt it themselves.

Busy and or Error 01

For error message 01 the manual says: Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean lens contacts.
Solve: Clean the electrical contacts on the camera and lens and use a Canon lens.
SO if you are using a different lens or a non Canon lens this could be what is wrong.

If you never changed a lens, it still can be that something went wrong in the communication between the camera and lens. Just careful remove the lens and with a dry and lint free cloth, clean all contacts on the lens and in the camera. While working on the lens, close the camera with the camera cap, or put the camera face down.
Don't use anything sharp while working on a lens or a camera.

So, have you cleaned the contacts as you were advised? You do this by removing the lens and cleaning the contacts on the camera body and on the lens where they meet with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

From working with third party lenses in the past what I've found is that Canon doesn't give up the "chip" technology so the older lens can not talk to the newer cameras. I suspect that Canon does this to promote their lenses over the competition. You might be able to send the lens to Sigma and have them re-chip it and have a great lens again.

Error 01 is generally associated with camera unable to communicate with lens. Could be contacts need cleaned; since lens is new contacts on camera are more likely starting point for cleaning. But, common issue is failure of something in the lens, but that seems unlikely as it is new ... but it could happen. You might search for other Canon Error 01 comments/solutions. Failing a solution from that, time to contact SigmaUSA repair to have them inspect/repair under warranty.

To NOT get that error you need to use in AV mode. It's the only way that old Sigmas work with the new Canons. It's an aperture bug that old Sigma lens have and some the only way to fix it is to rechip it. The problem is that Sigma no longer rechips the lens.
