How to update the map

The internal memory of the nuvi is full. Some maps will need to be delete before any new maps can be added. Typically, the map in the nuvi is named GMAPPROM.IMG and a map installed to an SD (or SDHC) memory card is named GMAPSUPP.IMG.

1) Remove the SD card from the memory slot

2) Connect the nuvi to the computer via USB cable.

3) Open the nuvi drive.

4) Locate and delete the GMAPPROM.IMG (or GSUPPROM.IMG) file(s). Optionally copy (instead of deleting) them to your hard drive in case there is a problem wit the new map file(s).

5) Empty the Recycle Bin.

6) Retry the map update of the nuvi.

This method will take some time to perform depending on how many map segments you are sending to the nuvi. Transferring the entire map can take over an hour. A quicker way is to send the maps to the SDHC card directly by inserting the card into a card reader. This eleminates the slow Garmin card reader from the equation and transfers are done in a fraction of the time. No maps will be on the nuvi - they will all be on the memory card instead. To update the SD or SDHC card, do this:

1) Repeat steps 1 thru 5 above. This removes the maps files from the nuvi.

2) Disconnect the nuvi from the computer.

3) Connect a card reader to the computer.

4) Insert the SD or SDHC card into the reader.

5) Locate and delete the GMAPPROM.IMG (or GSUPPROM.IMG) file(s). Optionally copy (instead of deleting) them to your hard drive in case there is a problem wit the new map file(s).

6) Update the map to the SD or SDHC card.

When either method is employed, only one map file set will result. GMAPPROM.IMG or GMAPSUPP.IMG is the name of this file set. You should ensure / change the name to GMAPPROM.IMG. Any subsequent file set added should be named GMAPSUPP.IMG.

The only difference in updating when you have a lifetime map update is that when you click on GET MAP you are taken to the download screen instead of the payment screen.

Area maps are not drawn up every year. There is easily a several year gap before mappers get back to any given area to map any new changes since the last mapping. If that bridge was just opened, mappers wouldn't have had a chance to add it to maps, allowing it to be added to the map software so you could update your gps device. Basically, the bridge was too new for your gps to know about it's existence yet.

Without access to your GPS and its make / model it is difficult to say if you have old maps or not.

Is it that it is taking you the long way around to places you know instead of using newer roads ?

It takes a long time for the GPS people to get all the latest roads into the system.

Thats why such as the TOMTOM have minor updates options the people submit so that your GPS will be aware of a closed road or some smaller new roads.

If your device supports going on-line for updates let it check for you and if it says there are newer maps or has an option to check for newer maps let it.
You are not committed to buy it but at least you will know

I'd suggest updating the software/maps in your GPS Device. This is the only method I Know of for correcting the errors that sometimes exist with them. Go to the manufacturers website and search for updates. If you don't know their website, you can google it.

i'm sorry BUT I HAVE TO TELL U THAT THERE AREN'T ANY FREE tomtom MAPS and updates unless u buy tomtom with already installed map

but there is a way to crack tomtom map 
but if you're not good with pc's you can't do it
i have done it and i have to tell that is pretty complicated and is better to buy maps then try to do it the bad way

If maps get outdated enough, any device can go awry. Keeping your maps updated should keep it working fine. TomTom has Tele Atlas map updates at their map store here: http://www.tomtom.com/products/maps/select.php

If your maps are in fact updated and you're still having difficulty, it might be time for an upgrade
