Cannon powershot sd900 lens will not close

Problem started off slowly with the lens not opening/closing completely. Now lens will not close at all and camera is non functional. error message on screen is "lens error, restart camera".
I have removed battery and memory card numerous times, does not look like there are any damages etc. to either components.

Work for about 50% of lens errors, but they're worth a try. The list includes:

  1. Remove the batteries and wait a few minutes
  2. Try pressing and holding the Menu, Function, Function Set, or OK while turning on the camera, or otherwise find a "factory reset" option.
  3. Try turning the camera on without a memory card inserted
  4. Place the camera flat on its back and turn it on while holding down the autofocus button, to try to cause the camera to attempt autofocus while the lens is extending
  5. Blow compressed air in any gaps around the lens - or use a shop vac
  6. Use a thin piece of paper or a needle to dislodge any visible bits of grit
  7. Gently tap the camera in an attempt to realign jammed mechanics or dislodge particles (obvious warning: could cause further damage)
  8. Gently push or pull the lens barrel, as a last resort (again, potential for further damage).

SOURCE: lens will not close

Defective mechanism, a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. You need professional service to fix it.

SOURCE: Canon SD 850 says lens error,

There could be a number of reasons for the lens error. ie. . sand in camera, impact damage etc. Typically the lens can be dissasembled and repaired by a competent camera repair technician. If you are certain that you did not damage the camera in any way I would send it back to canon for a warranty repair. If you however think you could have damaged it you are probably looking at around $100 to repair the camera. Hope this helps!

Here is a site that discusses things you can try to fix this for free. They do a much better job than I could, and they let you know the risks and steps to take, in order. Try this first, you might get lucky- they say 50% of stuck lenses or lens errors can be fixed.

Don't worry, this is a huge problem with extendable lenses, due to their construction with small, plastic gears that are easy to break with a bump or fall, or obstruction while extending.

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here are some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, or if repair costs close to the value of the camera, they're worth a try.

Cannon PowerShot S2 IS lens is stuck

I have the exact same problem, took it completely apart removed the zoom motor, physically turned the zoom gear and retracted the lens, reinstalled the motor, put it all back together, and found that I had the same problem and the lens wouldn't move out, so im pretty certain that the motor is bad, as the lens moves smoothly once the motor is not attached to it... looking for a replacement motor as i type...

Shutter not opening on canon powershot s40. screen is blank & images are black

Does the lens have a physical shutter that you can see, like metal petals that open and close? On my camera, the aperature is made of petals that open and close to regulate the light and they close down completely when the camera is not in use. The petals are controlled by a small servo that, if non-functional, will completely "blind" the camera CCD. Many cameras use electronic shutters that have no mechanics and that would indicate a hardware problem that most likely cant be fixed without a new PC board or lens/CCD assembly..
