I had a similar problem with my cub Cadet. It turned out that the Ignition Module on the engine was cracked. Motor started OK - but died as soon as a load (such as engaging the mower) was put on it.
These are not terribly hard to check, and/or change, yourself. Easy to get to once the motor shroud is removed.
My 25 HP Kohler engine has 2 modules. EXPENSIVE from the dealer - found MUCH better prices online.

sounds like either a saftey switch problem or a bad drive clutch on the pto. usuallly the mower shuts down, not the blades, they may have changed this though. my best guess would be a safety sensor try calling your local cub dealer and talking to the repair person he can shed light on the problem.
SOURCE: my cub cadet runs fine untilm the pto is engaged then it backfires and dies?
check the safety switch on the seat
SOURCE: i have a 1541 cub cadet, when I switch on the pto nothing happens
check for power going to the clutch i have seen the wires break going into the clutch under the engine
check the safety switch on the seat bypass it to test the switch then check the fuel filter a higher demand it might not keep up the flow needed
