  • Anonymous Aug 28, 2013

It's happening with every lens. I see a little bit of light if I remove the lens, but other than that, nothing.

The mirror inside might be stuck in the up position. Take out the lens and look inside. Do you see a mirror positioned at 45 degrees? If not, it might be stuck in the up position at the view finder prism.

Which lens? Is this happening with just one lens, or with every lens you mount on the camera?

If you remove the lens and look through it, can you see light? Perhaps an upside-down view of whatever is on the other side?

If you look into the camera body after removing the lens, do you see a mirror at a 45-degree angle?

Foam is falling out & sticky in my minolta x700

This is light seal material that keeps the film chamber light tight to prevent contamination of the film. If this is bad, chances are the camera itself will need some servicing. The light meter and shutter speeds need to be calibrated as well as the lubricants changed in the cameras various mechanisms. This can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

You can download the manual from

There are illustrated instructions for loading/unloading film beginning on page 17.

35 mm, Minolta X700

Is the re-wind button stuck in? If so it can be released by moving the take-up sprocket manually. If that did not work there is a broken take up gear. This was a common problem with the X700, a white plastic gear was used at the bottom of the take up spool mechanism that just was not strong enough especially when trying to get just one more shot from the roll of film. No new parts are available.
