Samsung LN-S4692D (46" LCD) - 13 months old - I was watching a DVD and the picture went black. I can still hear the audio. The "black" screen isn't completely black and changes brightness as I can hear the scenes on the movie change. Changed sources to satelite and air and the same thing is happening. Powered her down and back on and still no picture. Can't find anything in the troubleshooting part of the manual. I think it could be serious.

Samsung LCD 46 inch tv will not work, the screen is blank. We still get video but the feed could be coming out of the cable box, I am not sure. We bought this LCD JUL. 06, it went blank on APR. 08. We bought the extended warranty from Plasmahouse, this is a horrible company, they will not answer phone or e-mail, anyway I would like to get it fixed, Samsung is no help.

just lost picture and menu but have sound local tv man says there is a service bulletin on this tv from samsung as they have had many repairs to replace the tcon board 46 in samsung

  • Anonymous Jul 01, 2008

I had the same problem with my Samsung LN-S4692D 46 inch TV. After 17 months, the picture went black, but the sound was fine. I called Samsung and told them about the problem, but they said it was out of warranty. That is when I researched the problem online and found this site and realized LOTS of people were having the exact same problem. I called Samsung back and asked to speak to someone in executive customer service. I told them that I had researched the issues on this TV and they had many complaints online for the same issue. At that point, they agreed to extend the warranty and have the TV repaired at no cost to me. It took

about two weeks and couple more phone calls for them to find someone to fix it for me (I live in a rural area). They came and picked up the TV and told me that is was indeed the TOC board, but they don't have any in stock. They are going to replace the LCD panel which includes the TOC board and hopefully will have it back to me in the next week.

By the way, Samsung extended the warranty for three months past the repair date. (They ask you when you call in if this is the first time you have had trouble with the TV). I asked them if I have the same trouble with it again after three months will they repair it and they said no. I am really hoping this board will last longer than the last one.

Thank you to all who have posted your issues on this site! It really helped me to get the repair I deserved after paying $2500 for a TV that went out after just 17 months.

  • SamsungHater Jul 04, 2008

I have the same problem. The good news is mine is under an extended warranty at Best Buy, so the repair is free. The bad news is the part is backordered several weeks, and neither Best Buy nor Samsung is offering any relief.

  • Anonymous Jul 06, 2008

Im having the same problem. Samsung needs to pony up and admit they
have produced a lemon. My tv is 18 months old. I paid 2500.00 for
this tv. Thats something like 140.00 per month to own this piece of
junk. Does anyone know who to call to actually get somewhere with
    samsung This isnt right.

  • Anonymous Jul 31, 2008

Same problem here too; Samsung told me they cannot do anything for me and the TV is only 17 months old. I did file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and I would suggest all to do the same as well. This appears to be a defect in their product and is not isolated to only a few of us.

  • Anonymous Aug 06, 2008

Same problem with this tv today, called the 800 number listed for the service center on Samsung website. They report that it is NOT a known issue with this model even though there are several other reports of the same problem out there. New York 800 number on Samsung website reports that this is "not a known issue or we would have a recall on it" but will not say that it hasn't been reported before.

  • Anonymous Aug 08, 2008

i am having the same problem too after 18 months the screen just went blank. I tried the same things. I called Samsung and they gave me the number for a trained repair service company that do repairs for there product; they are suppose to come to my home and service it next tuesday.

  • Anonymous Aug 09, 2008

don't even know my model type but I bought a Samsung less than 2 years ago and the picture went blank on us as well. What is the best course of action to get this thing fixed? Has anyone found a way for Samsung to fess up and replace or fix the TV?

  • hsed Aug 11, 2008

Same thing just happened to us 16 months after purchase. We had black screen with sound for a few days and then the sound went too. Of course our warranty has expired too. We initially had sound problems 1 month after purchase and Samsung replaced the TV....now from reading other reviews it sounds like we will not have any luck in calling Samsung.

  • Anonymous Aug 11, 2008

I have the same problem with my TV. It is 20 months old and the picture went black. There is sound but no picture. I can see the lamps are on in the back of the TV and the screen has a faint glow to it. My TV is also not under warranty but this actually doesn't seem to be the biggest problem. There is a thread somewhere in here that the problem we're all having is with something called the T-Con board (timing control board) which has the Samsung part # bn81-01286a. I spoke with several repair shops and all the people I spoke with said that the problems we have are consistent with a disfunctional T-con board (though they can't say for sure without testing it). One thing to note that all the repair people have said is that there is not much they can do to test which boards in the TV are broken since they're basically impossible to probe. They just make their best guess given the symptoms and then order a new board, try it out, and then see if it solves the problem; if not, they return it and order and try another board. The main problem with all of this is that the t-Con board for this TV is on a nationwide backorder. I have tried calling several companies, as have a few repair guys I've asked to try, and we have all come up empty. Not only that, but Samsung will not give any answer to anybody about when they expect them to be available. I spoke with Samsung customer service and they assured me that Samsung does still make this part. I then was able to get connected to the "Executive" customer support who emailed somebody who he claimed would have information about when this part was expected to be off backorder. He said he should hear back in a day or two from now, though I'm honestly not holding my breath. It really seems that we're all having the same problem, all the TVs are failing right around the same time, and it's probably due to this one defective board. Samsung claims to have no knowledge of this problem, and yet, here we all are having individually reported it to them. This is total ****. It could be a year before this part becomes available- who knows? And even when it does, we now know it's probably going to blow up again in another 15-20 months. Nobody at Samsung seems willing to hone up to the fact that they've built a lemon and ripped us all off. Pretty depressing. I'll probably try to contact the Better Business Bureau though I feel like that will certainly get me nowhere. Don't know what else to try except to buy a new TV that is not a Samsung and tell everyone I know that Samsung products can't be trusted.

  • KenjiMike Aug 13, 2008

Same problem...Samsung LN-S4692D 46 inch HDTV with sound but no picture. Our TV is 2 years old. We tried unplugging the TV. We tried the DVD player, but still no picture. Customer Support is going to have a technician call to schedule a repair.

  • Anonymous Aug 18, 2008

Has anyone replaced the "T-CON" board and fixed the problem?

  • lns4692s Aug 20, 2008

I have the exact same problem with my Samsung LN-S4692D LCD TV (purchased in January '07) since last week. It has sound but no picture with faint LCD glow. From the number of messages posted here, it looks like this model is failing with same cause around 18 months. So much for advertised panel life of 23 years. What is this T-CON BN81-01286 part? Is it same as the LCD Controller that is mentioned in Solution #3?

  • RSKI62 Aug 25, 2008

I Have the sane problem. after about 18 months or so we went from a flicker on the sreen to no pickture just sound. The Samsung tech. support said I was out of luck. I'm shocked that there are this many people having the same problem and reporting it and nothing is being done about it from Samsung.I'm Callinf Best Buy and taking a copy of this report to them to show them the this is not just one person problem like they said on the phone. I spent 3 hrs checking connections and the cable company. What a waist of time. VERY BOTHERD BY THIS .THE SET WAS NOT CHEAP!

Same extact problem. Samsung being very unhelpful. Will call BBB to see if they can help. Never buy samsung.

  • Anonymous Aug 26, 2008

Anybody have any luck replacing the LCD controller? This is so frustrating hearing the sound without any video.

  • Anonymous Aug 29, 2008

Just wanted everyone waiting on the T-Con part for LN-S4692D to know that it is in stock now at Samsungparts. Please post your success or failure in fixing the set. Best of luck!!

  • Anonymous Aug 29, 2008

Its available at samungparts.com but also available (cheaper!) at
vancebaldwin.com and partstore.com. Partstore.com has free shipping on
orders over $75.00, mine is coming in on the 3rd of September so i will
post after that! Good luck to everyone!

  • Anonymous Aug 31, 2008

I have the same exact problem. I have an LN-S4692D model. I have no picture, but the dim light when I turn it off and back on and switch the channels. I do have sound too. This is really annoying cause it was not a cheap TV.

  • Anonymous Sep 04, 2008

Problem Fixed!! If you have this problem get the LCD controller board from either samsungparts.com, vancebaldwin.com or partstore.com. Part number BN81-01286A A/S T-CON Board.

I had this problem with my TV, found this site, waited for about 2 months for the part to come in, replaced it and now my TV works again!

  • Anonymous Sep 05, 2008

I have the same issue as everyone else here. I have the same model, Samsung LN-S4692D 46inch. After 1 year and 6 months of watching tv, the screen suddenly went black. I heard sound but all you can see is the backlight. So I called Samsung, explained to them the situation, but because I did not purchase an extended warranty, they did not help me. I told them so many people appeared to have the same issue, the customer service rep said there is no recall on this TV, so there was nothing he could do. I argued but all they did was refer this issue to the executive customer relations group (Or something like that.) I was told they would call me in a week, they called me three weeks later and left a message stating that there was nothing they could do.

I wanted to fight more, but its been more than 7 weeks without watch a TV I paid 2 grand for. So I saw the comments about the T-Con board which I purchased on Tuesday and I will be receiving it today. I will post what my outcome is here as I'm sure so many people are apprehensive about performing the T-con board swap. I still believe, however, the Samsung should own up to this issue. I will never by another Samsung product again.

  • dlrotenberg Sep 09, 2008

I'm having the exact same issue. TV is not even 2 years old and only used for about 1 hour a day. I'm now working with the Executive Customer Service Department, basically demanding that they repair or replace this TV even though it's out of warranty. I've told them about this site and all of the postings regarding this issue. I also told them that many of us are going to report Samsung to the BBB. They don't seem to bothered. They are now forwarding me to the Case Management Division (they deal specifically with repairs outside of warranty), which will contact me within 48-72 hours (yeah right). Assuming they are going to shaft me, I've ordered the Tcon board from partsstore.com. A co-worker is going to help me install it. We'll see. I doubt I'll ever buy Samsung again. I'll let you all know how it goes.

same problem black screen with sound

  • KenjiMike Sep 13, 2008

Update to 8/13/08 posting. We had some difficulty getting an in-home appointment with the Samsung recommended TV repair facility, so decided to take the TV in ourselves. Three weeks and $450 later, the T-con board (aka control board) was replaced and picture restored.

  • swanhillfarm Sep 17, 2008

I just received my replacement LCD board. My concern is whether there is a risk of electrocution when replacing this board, as that would make for a really bad day! Is there a repair manual or directions for doing this? I am pretty handy and have done some basic residential wiring, but don't know much about TV's. Thanks!!!

  • kerri491 Oct 03, 2008

I have the same problem with my Samsung LN-T4661F. After about a year turned on the TV and got a blank picture with sound. I have had it serviced 3 times.Replaced power supply, power supply switch, T-Con motherboard and now (third time) LCD panel. But after all im reading here it's bound to happen again. When I lose picture it seems to happen when the humidity is 35% or higher. I have told the repair facility this as well as executive customer service. Im told that after 3 repairs they will relace the unit. Well see if that happens.

  • swanhillfarm Oct 28, 2008

Warning...we replaced the T-Con board last month, and it still did not work. Over a month after first contacting Samsung, the reply I got from them was basically, "Sorry about your luck!" So, we are out the cost of the TV, and now a T-Con board that was apparently not the problem, even though the symptoms are all the same, with the black screen and normal sound. Ours started when we hooked up the Wii, but think that was a coincidence. Regardless, we are back to using our old Sony Trinitron.

  • Anonymous Nov 12, 2008

I have the exact same problem. 4 months past warranty the picture died, but sound still worked. Called Samsung and got no help at all. They told me to pay one of there authorized repair facilities to fix it and them send them a bill for consideration; yeah right! Not even going to waste my time/money. VERY DISSAPOINTED. I will never buy any Samsung product ever again. I have had an LG TV for about 6 years and it still works perfectly; I will be going with an LG for future purchases. I will also be filing a complaint with the BBB; probably will not help me, but maybe if enough people complain it will help others in the future with this problem.

  • joltinjoe65 Nov 18, 2008

Same problem, sound but no picture. Purchased tv in Feb. 07 - dead by November 08. Samsung says to bad, out of warranty.

  • Wolf2813 Nov 20, 2008

Same thing as the rest of you guys, except I live in Asia. How the heck am I going to get my American TV replaced or fixed, I do have a samsung dealer in the store, but I don't really trust them. Oh, and does Samsung deliver internationally for the tv if it's under warrant?

  • joltinjoe65 Nov 21, 2008

Received feedback from the New Jersey BBB. They could not do anything, but advised that I file a complaint with the NJ Attorney General. They have a website and an easy form to fill out. I reccomend you do this if you are having the same problem with your set.

I also have the black screen with sound

    History

11 months - horizontal line in screen

11.5 month - screen replaced for free

12.5 month - black screen with sound

    13 month - screen replaced for $90

13 months 26 days - black screen with sound

I have had 2 samsung computer monitors that have been very good to me. My first samsung tv, complete garbage.

I am hoping that the last repair is still under warranty and I only have to pay the $90 for repair.

I will never buy another SUMSUNG product . SAMSUNG = FECAL MATTER

PS. I noticed that both times that the screen went black. It rained.

  • orville8412 Dec 29, 2008

I was watching Monday Night Football and the picture went dark on my SAMSUNG LNS4692D ............ Seems like an epidemic !! ;-] The set was 1 year and 11 months old. I had used my VISA card when I purchased it and filed a VISA extension of warrant claim. When VISA called to authorize the $700 repair, I explained that I had no confidence in the quality of the SAMSUNG. I suggested that I would be better served if they just sent me a check........ and they DID !! ($750). I went to COSTCO and spent $1049 (including tax) for a Panasonic 46" 1080P plasma (I had paid $1890 for Samdung 4692 23 months earlier).

Now I'm considering whether I want to spend the bucks for the T-Con board and replace it ?? Unless Samdung has corrected the problem, I'll be paying ~$200 for 23 months worth of television (when it goes bad again).

    My model
is LNS4095DX. I am having the same exact problem (sound with no picture) with
my Samsung LCD after watching it for about 2 hours. I am currently fixing the
problem by unplugging the power cord from the wall for about 4 hours, then the
TV will work perfectly fine for about another 2 hours and I will follow the
same steps over and over.  Needless
to say I am sick of doing this. I went to Samsungparts.com to look for the part
you guy call the T-Con Board and cannot find it on the parts list for my model.
    Can anyone help?

    Also, I
spoke to the customer service numerous times and they cant help since I am out
of warranty. They told me that I was out of luck and acted like I am the only
    person/customer having this problem.
The one service rep basically informed me that I was dumb for not buying
an extended warranty with my TV.
I am very disappointed and unhappy with Samsung.

  • joltinjoe65 Jan 10, 2009

Try the NJ Attorney General. They actually sent my complaint to Samsung and I got a call from Samsung corporate. Of course, I had disposed of the TV by that time so all they could do was send me a $50 Best Buy card. They wouldn't tell me what they would have done otherwise. If we generate enough of these, maybe the AG will take action.

I purchased and replaced the T-Con board and my Samsung LNS 4692 now works fine (for how long ????????????)

  • markchambers Jan 25, 2009

Same problem my LN-s4692d is only 2 years old and no I did not get an extended warranty though for what I paid it would last more than 2 years please let me know if I can fix this problem myself or do I have to call samsung to make a service call thanks

  • Sammyhater Feb 28, 2009

Just wanted to log yet another LN-S4692D T-Con board failure. We replaced it using advice on this site. Samsung techs had recommending replacing the TV. It continues to amaze that samsung won't address this problem for its customers. We continue to spread the bad word about Samsung whenever possible.

  • Anonymous Mar 02, 2009

Another one bits the dust....Same problem here. thank god i bought the 3 year warranty. TV is 2 years 6 month old. once fixed by a tech I will post the solution.

  • porcubunny Mar 18, 2009

Hey guys. I was wondering if the fix by replacing the T-Con board also applies to no picture AND no sound. That's the symptoms of my 4692D. Backlight is ok, but like most of you I have the exact same symptoms only with NO sound as well. Will the T-Con help me?

  • eddieb6151 Apr 17, 2009

I have a samsung 40 inch modelln-r408d.version sp01.Can anyone tell me the part # for the t-con board i need to order and where i might order it from. Thank you

  • ksutter Apr 26, 2009

Thanks for all the posts. I have the same problem with the same model. Our television is 3 months out of warrantee and Samsung basically said, "So Sorry" and gave us the name of a company to come look a the set. I found this site and phoned Samsung back. When faced with the fact that there are a huge number of complaints, the response was "Our management is reviewing to determine if there is an issue, but you can call your neigborhood repair guy". Basically, I got a "Sucks to be you" response.
I hate spending $3K on anything, but certainly not for something that lasts me 2 years. I have the T-Con board now and am going to use your instructions to try to repair the set.
    Thanks

  • Anonymous May 02, 2009

Same TV, same problem, just took a little longer for the defect to show up. Just dropped the TV off at the repair shop. I can not believe Samsung will not take care of the consumer. My opinion is the same as the rest of the dissatisfied people on this thread. I hope the economy takes this company down. Sony from here on out. Samsung sucks!

Replaced my A/S TCON board (Samsung Part Number: BN81-01286A)
    I ordered it from www.partstore.com.

My TV is alive again. Thank you so much for the info.

Now time for the oath ...

I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SAMSUNG TV AGAIN !

I had the same problem and I replaced the t-con board. My t.v. is fixed!!!! I just couldn't see spending another 700.00 dollars for a repair shop to fix it. The t-con board is located at the top of the t.v. once you remove the back cover. Be very careful removing the two plugs at the top of the board which was easy once I figured out how the clips worked. there is a black lever like connection which flips up, then grip with your fingers the tab and slide the tape like wires straight out. The bottom plug is very simple. Also to expose the t-con board you will have to remove a heat shield cover. Once removed there is foil looking tape that needs to be peeled back to expose the board. The board is very sensitive to static electricity so if you have a grounding strap that you can strap to your wrist and ground to the frame while performing your repair. Its best to lay the t.v. face down on the kitchen table with a blanket to protect the screen. Good luck!

My three year old 32" samsung model also had the sound but no picutre problem. Found this thread, and discovered all the replace the t-con board posts. After all the reading on here, I went samsungparts.com, and ordered the t-con board for my model.$112 including shipping.

The part arrived yesterday, took about 2 hours to replace, (found that the 32" is different from the over 40" descriptions. Much easier to get to) and once it was plugged in and turned on, it is working again. Thanks to all the posts that got me in the right direction

I experienced the same loss of picture on my Samsun LN-S4692D six days ago. Based on the very helpful descriptions of others here of how they solved the problem by installing a new T-Con board, I ordered one from partstore.com on Saturday, but the status on Monday became "backordered". I canceled that order, and bought one here: http://www.samsungparts.com/part_detail.asp?catalog_name=Parts+and+Accessories&product_id=BN81-01286A&search_model=LNS4692D
I was successful in installing the card, and my picture is back! It took me longer than expected, about four hours, because it was hard to remove the shield over the card. You need to remove an electrostatic sheild that covers most of the electronics, not too difficult, but there still is a 1/2 in. bar that prevents access to the shield over the card. To lift it, you need to remove the screws that connects that frame to the one that covers the LCD itself. Don't worry, there is no risk to the LCD. I removed all those screws, but lifted only the bar near the top of the TV where the T-Con board is.
The next step is carefully peeling back the aluminum tape that covers openings in shield over the board so you can remove it. There is also a hard-to-access screw that lies between the plastic case of the TV and the metal chassis at the top of the TV that must be removed  before the board over can by removed. I couldn't locate a thin enough Phillips right-angle tool, so I took the easy way out and drilled an access hole through top of the plastic case. It won't show when the TV is in the cabinet, and it is now covered by a piece of black electrical tape.
Billnix description of how to open the connector to the ribbon cables at the top of the card was very useful. I disconnected those easily from the old card, and reconnected to the new one without difficulty. I had some trouble removing the connector that plugs in to the bottom of the card, I broke off the two tabs on the side of the connector while I was gently trying to properly disconnect it, I must not have figured out the right technique! I managed to remove the connector with no further damage using a mini screwdriver. None of the pins were damaged, and I plugged it in to the new card without difficulty.
Here are a few pictures:

Three small screws, and the two hex-head screws that hold in the blue RS-232 type connector, must be removed before the large electrostatic shield can come out. The hard-to-access screw between the plastic case of the TV and the metal chassis that holds the center portion of the shield that covers the T-con board. Lacking a thin-enough right angle Phillips screwdriver, I took the easy way out and drilled a hole big enough for the shaft of a screwdriver throught the plastic case of the TV. It is now covered by black electrical tape, and doesn't show when the TV is my media cabinet.
It's great to have a working TV again for about $200 ($156 for the board plus shipping & taxes)! I hope what I have written helps some else with this problem...

Fellow Samsung owners, here are my thoughts on this particularly flat panel design flaw and why Samsung, in my opinion, appears to be side stepping this issue for some. Well, I'm here to hopefully spread the word and I encourage others Samsung owners of these models to help get the word out as well. I say get the word out because from researching into why my $4,400 LCD turned into an expensive speaker, one topic never appears to be mentioned as to why the video eventually fails.

T-Con Board Failures... (aka, Video Processor/LCD Feed circuit board), computer guys may refer to this circuit board as a GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) board.
I'm also quite confident that if you haven't had this problem yet, you will. If you have had this problem and think it can't happen again, you are wrong.

So, what is this big secret topic you ask? One word, HEAT... Samsung installed this heat sensitive Processor Unit directly above an extremely warm Power Supply board. For example, open up a desktop or laptop computer and you will find cooling fans attached to heat sinks on the CPU and GPU, these Processors generate a large amount of heat. Don't remove that heat and the Processor will ALWAYS sustain damage. Samsung was at least nice enough to put a very weak heat sink in my $4,400 so I'm definitely not bitter. Did that sound bitter?

It gets better though folks. What has Samsung quietly done about this issue? Here's a clue. The new LCD sets appear to have been designed with, get this, the T-Con board BELOW the Power Supply... So, if you run out and buy one of the newer models, please refrain from operating the LCD upside down for extended periods in warm environments... Couldn't resist, LOL ;-)

And finally, here are few tips to protect that awesome picture of your Samsung in the future. Make sure the LCD always has proper ventilation. NEVER cover the top vents with anything. I would also avoid placing the LCD near any external heat sources like heaters or areas of your house that stay too warm. If you have the mechanical aptitude, add/modify the existing heat sink on the GPU and/or add a Processor cooling fan. Even a small fan silent fan placed behind the LCD blowing up and toward the top center back of the LCD is cheap insurance.

P.S.
Dear Samsung,
If you have any job openings, please consider this my application and cover letter. Experience/Education: former IT Director and recently laid off from that position, former Chemist, pre-med degree from LSU, above average troubleshooting skills not limited to electronics. So Samsung, please feel free to consider me for each and every open position, seriously, hire me! I’m actually starting to get tired of working on my house and watching TV!!!!
Best regards, Ernest

Replaced my A/S T CON board (Samsung Part Number: BN81-01286A)  and my TV IS ALIVE AGAIN !!!!!!!!!
Got it from www.partstore.com. Delivered overnight for an extra 30$. Install instructions are on this website. I'd say a 5 out of 10 on a difficulty scale.
Now time for the oath.
Repeat after me  ......
"I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SAMSUNG TV EVER AGAIN !"

The right name is logic board,,AKA [T-Con board]

In most LCD it is part of the main board,,

If you have sound, and the back lights kick in,,, it's the logic board ,,, in most cases the screen will flicker when you try to change channels with no menu or sound bar.

  • Anonymous Apr 10, 2011

The technical name is TIMING AND CONTROL BOARD.
Typically a fuse marked F1 of 3A or lower may blow. It is not a regular fuse but a very tiny SMD (surface mounted device), I soldered a jumper wire thin strand using a very low heat, across the blown fuse and the TV is back running happily.

  • kroniteman May 17, 2011

Where exactly is that F1 located? I looked on the Tcon board for 30 minutes trying to find its location

Solution no.14 is correct. I did purchase (142.00) and install the card. Having spent 25 or so years desining boards I can assure you the micro connectors will not take much horsing around. Sqeeze the ears on the top connector, flip the black plastic bar up on the other 2 connectors. In addition some caution must be taken to eliminate the chances of static electricity ie. keep the board in the bag until its time to install. My set had 3 screws at the top bar and I too drilled 5/16 holes in the top of the housing. The foil shield is also important and should be replaced and taped down to the shield cover as good as you can with electrical tape. The entire task took about 1.5 hrs with a 2 on the 1-5 skill level.

I wrote a while back on this thread that I had the same problem. At the time, the T-Con board was on nationwide backorder and nobody had any idea when it would be in stock (it sounds like they are now in stock from recent posts). However, I would still be worried that this board will fail in another year or so since it's the identical part in the identical TV; ask yourself why you'd expect it not to fail. My TV was out of warranty but I repeatedly called the customer service at Samsung and argued that this was a defective TV and they should do something about it. After much complaining, I actually got them to send me a brand new model, the LN46A550, which is the 1080p version of the TV being discussed here. I had to pay an additional $300 (which is what they valued the new TV above the LNS4692D) since it was out of warranty but I thought this was an excellent deal since the T-con board was around ~$200 with shipping anyway. They delivered the new TV for free and took the old one away. This new TV has a much nicer picture than the old one (even at 1080i resolution) plus it has higher resolution for blue ray and any gaming systems you might have. Also, the new TV comes with a new 1 year warranty and it does not contain the defective board since it's a different model. I highly recommend this course of action. For those still under warranty, you probably can avoid paying the $300. If they only offer to replace your T-con board , make the argument that the board is likely to fail again, and next time it won't be under warranty! tell them you want a new TV. One last piece of advice: there are several tiers to Samsung customer service. When you call the main number, ask to be connected to "Executive Customer Service". This will put you in contact with someone who actually has the authority to get you a new TV. I hope this helps.

I strongly advise against ordering any parts from samsungparts.com. After spending $175 on this part they sent me a defective TCon Board and refused to refund me. I also contacted a local tv repair specialist and they also said samsungparts will not refund you no matter what. Very shady operation and terrible customer service!

  • Anonymous Jan 27, 2012

DO NOT ORDER from samsungparts.com! Buyer beware! I ordered a TCon Board from them and the sent me a defective one and would not refund my money. Very shady operation and terrible customer service. You're probably better off buying a new tv or having a diagnostic run by your local repair shop for $50 before wasting valuable time and money with samsungparts.com

The defective part on your tv is actually called the Lcd controller board. Most of the Samsung models do not have this as a part that is separate from the panel but this model does. It is taking me about a week to get the part in and it is less than 250 dollars from Samsung. It has fixed all of this particular model with sound no video and a back light that changes.
Thanks

Josh

My TV (same model) had the same problem except the sound worked (no picture, but the back light works).

Samsung is replacing it with a new model due to a long delay getting a replacement panel.

The TV failed 2 days before the warranty expired.

The new TV has better specs & is now less then half the price of the original.

The repair guy said it's cheaper to replace LCD TVs now then to get them fixed - he said he wouldn't even call a shop unless it's under warranty because you'll just spend hundreds of dollars only to find out a better replacement is cheaper then repairing the old one.

We had this same problem as well, same model (LN-S4692D - 46in) It lasted a good 3+ years though so I guess we should count ourselves lucky compared to the others? Still, it's ridiculous to spend so much to only last so long.

Anyway, thanks to this board, I ordered a new t-con board, got it overnight, took the whole thing apart and swapped it out and now it works again, yay! We are NOT tech savy at all so we were pretty proud of ourselves! Thanks everyone !

I purchased a T-con board for $116 on ebay and followed the directions available on this website. It took under 90 minutes to fix and the TV works better than prior to the problem. Color saturation is noticeably better with the new LCD controller board (t-con).

Thanks to everyone who posted directions and pix on this problem.

I would add that the two ribbon cables at the very top of the board were interesting to remove. The black "strips" of plastic holding them down need to be rolled from the top of the TV toward the bottom to release the flat ribbon cables. Then just reinsert the ribbon cables all the way to the bottom of their slots and "roll" the black plastic strips closed over them.

Otherwise the instructions were very easy to follow. I also color coded the dozens of screws with sharpies and color coded the muffin tins to match. Make putting everything back together very easy.

I have the same probelm. Exact same TV, about 18 months old. No video, just audio and it just went on me. No warranty, and the tech suggested to take it in somewhere. I started looking online to get an idea of what kind of cost I was looking at. Based on what you have posted here, and the pics (thanks for that) I have ordered the part called the T-CON from Samsung and will give it a try.

I will NEVER buy samsung again. I had went through an extensive process with a home theatre package that broke down 3 times. I had been told after 3rd time, they'd replace it but guess what? They didn't and I told them how unhappy I was. I tried to tell them basically look, I buy a lot of electronics and so do my friends and coworkers. In fact, I told the guy I'd get more use out of their product if I took it behind the house, lit it on fire, and had my friends over for a beer to tell them the storey. So if you guys continue to send me **** replacements, I'll just go buy a sony. They didn't care, sent me 'refurbished' replacement units etc, etc.........So after about 6 months of BS and all that, they told me to send it to the Future Shop I bought it from, and they would contact the store to let them know it was coming. So I got store credit in the end and bought a sony which I've had no trouble with. I tell you, if this works when I move next year I'm likely to sell off my 46er and buy a new SONY or LG or AQUIOS.

No more Samsung after I get rid of this TV. No phones, no electronics. Nothing.

  • Anonymous Oct 28, 2008

Well I rec'd the 'tcon' by mail and although quite skeptical, put down a cloth, put the tv on my table, and got at it with the instructions and pictures here. When I hung it on the wall, it WORKED.

Thanks to all for your assistance. I live in Northern Canada and there's no way I would have gotten away with less than $1000 in repairs. Instead, the part cost me about $215 after shipping and extra customs.

The TV is fixed. I just want to say thanks for bjryskie for giving me the courage to purchase and install the board on my own. This was not a simple task. There are many screws first of all. The most important part is to be very gentle when removing the panel that rest above the T-con board. There is a ribbon that is connected to the board that is secured to the panel above it. Also, very important is to secure the two ribbons in the two slots on the board and snap in, but to not push the "orange" ribbons too far in, or you will have problems with your picture. I pushed the left most ribbon in too far and it caused the left half of the picture to be 70% lighter than the right had side which was normal. I had to remove the left ribbon, reseat it, then snap in. But I did not push it in as far as I did before and it worked!!! You will need one person to help with balancing and securing the board unless you decide to completely remove the entire panel above the board, (which I didnt).
All I needed was a picture of what the board looked like and where it belongs and I was fine. You can find a pic of it at the AVS forums here. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=118863&d=1220531321

(I hope this is ok.) You may have to register to view the pics however.I've seen a lot of people say its just easy, but that's not entirely true. You must be very careful when pulling any thing out. Hope this helps!! Good luck.

Same thing happened to me! I haven't began to try to fix mine yet. But, I would strongly urge people to contact the BBB so others with the same problem might get some satisfaction from Samsung in the future. With enough of us reporting, they can't sweep this problem with the TV under the rug.

I had same issue with same TV. It's 1 1/2 years old. I still haven't heard from the shop what the issue is yet. Samsung should offer to fix this issue at little or no charge to the consumer - whether or not the warranty has expired. Nobody would ever spend over $3K for something and expect it to work less than 2 years. I will never buy another Samsung TV - that you can count on.

Call Samsung and tell them your problem.

Even though my TV was 13 months old Samsung sent someone out for an in home warranty repair. They determined that the LCD panel was bad. The part was back ordered with no expected delivery date. They replaced my 720 TV with a brand new 1080P model (LNT4661FX) with twice the contrast ratio. They also gave me a 90 day warranty on the new set.

Call Samsung!

  • Anonymous Jun 01, 2008

Hey pjj300...Try to be a little optimistic. 100% of all Samsung TVs can't be doomed. You will be the first to know if my replacement TV bites it. Until then I'll keep enjoying the 1080 view from my couch.

Seeing the same problem with my 18-month old LN46A550P3F. Tried contacting Samsung Customer Support, and they stonewalled, just saying they would do nothing with a TV out of the 1-year warranty. Very frustrated with their response to this problem.
I've ordered a T-CON board replacement, to try my luck that way. Anyone tried replacing that board (part no. BN81-01696A) on this model TV? Here's to hoping that it's not terribly hard.

An update on my situation. I had the same exact problem as everyone else. Sound, but no picture 4 months out of warranty. No help whatsoever from Samsung. After reading some very helpful posts on this forum I decided to try and repair it myself. I ordered the t-con board for about $116. Received the part, tore the tv apart, installed the new t-con board, reassembled and it is now working again. For how long I don't know. I am very happy it's working again, but how long will it last? Just waiting for it to go out again. Pretty simple repair process. All you need are basic tools and some common sense. Just be gentle with everything. I butchured some parts taking it apart, but now that I have done it it's a piece of cake. Good luck to everyone with this problem. Samsung can go #@&% themselves.

It sounds the same as our problem which was the T-Con board. We replaced the T-Con board ourselves after ordering the part from samsungparts.com. It was a lot of taking apart to get to the right part to replace but we got it put back together and it's working now.

I had a similiar problem with this TV. It will power up the screen for about 1-2 sec and then goes black. The sound stays on. This happened with the humidity was 69%. I read through many posts and some suggest humidity may be a problem. So I turned on the a/c and dried it down to 60% 70F and sure enough the TV powered up normally. I am watching TV now. This is worth a try before calling the repair man.

Hi, i have a fairly new samsung 46" tv with sound but no picture

Please check in dark room condition if you can see the light come up in the background of the tv LCD. If you can see light it would be a T-Con board or main board problem. I think those tv had some issues with the T-con board.

Sound but no picture

first guess would be the inverter circuit board. If you decide to replace it your self, please be carefull as there is hight voltage on this part. All connections should be done with the tv disconnected from outlet. Search results for LN S4692D

46" LCD Samsung TV Model# LN-S4692D I have no picture

The back light inverter board may have gone out or it is not getting the 24vdc from the power supply module. Start checking for voltage feeding the inverter board.
