You say you have a firewire cable so I'm guessing you realize there is a difference between the firewire cable and the USB cable. You cannot transfer video with the USB cable.

What is your operating system XP, Vista or something else?

When you plug in the firewire cable to the camera and the computer and then turn on the camera does anything happen at all? I cannot recall the exact message, but you should see a small pop-up in the taskbar that something about detecting a DV device.

If you don't see it there may be a variety of problems, but I would still open a video capture application to see if the software "sees" the camera. Windows Movie Maker will work, but I use another product called Scenalzyer. You can download a free copy of Scenalzyer at www.scenalyzer.com. The demo copy is fully functional, but it will leave a "watermark" on your video. You'll need to pay for it to capture video without the watermark.

Assuming you try one of these software packages and you do not have any success I would do the following: right click on My computer and select properties, now select the Hardware tab and finally click on Device Manager. Look through the list and see if you can find something like 1394 Host Controller. If you find it, does it have any exclamation points or question marks next to it?

If none of this helps let me know and we can try some other things. Lastly, I want you to know that I'm not paid for this. It's a strange hobby know, but I like helping when I can. If you find any of this helpful (even if it does not ultimately solve your problem) I hope you will rate this positively. Thanks and good luck.

My Sony camcorder wouldn't work with firewire either until I downloaded a fix at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=CA0F2007-18B5-4112-8BD6-8BF4BD3130B9&displaylang=en

Hope that helps!

SOURCE: JVC GR DVL9800 - Vista won't recognize

I have the same camera and use vista without a problem. However I use the firewire interface and not the USB which might be the explanation.
By the way, I can't find my manual. The date and time don't stay saved for any length of time between use. Is there a baterry that need to be changed and if so where is it?

Thanks

SOURCE: Using Windows Movie Maker

Windows Movie Maker is pretty picky about file formats. You might want to use Pinnacle Studio. This way once you plug your computer in and turn it on Pinnacle will capture the video for you which is something that Movie Maker was never designed to do.

We are missing our driver and need to download a driver for GR-D750U camcorder

hello btb..... Don't use USB to transfer video from a miniDV tape based machine. Use Firewire. Cheap and easy to install if your computer has an available PCI slot or PCMCIA slot (laptop).

USB will not be successful. Joe Thanks for choosing Fixya!

Win XP sp2 not recognizing gr-d70

I had a similar issue. I had never been able to download video to computer because the computer never recognized the camera. As a last resort, I bought a new firewire cord today -- and my computer recognized the camera as soon as I turned the camera to play! It was four years in the making (I thought there was something wrong with my camera this entire time!), but it was just a cord issue. Now the cord that came with the camera is in the trash, and I can download video. I did buy an (XP) driver for I think $8 online, but I'm not sure whether that really had anything to do with it (I have SP3). I bought it from www.helpdrivers.com, and it was called the JVC / GR-D70U USB Mass Storage Class Driver + G.726 Decoder / Windows 98-98Se-Me-2000-XP, Item# 3021598. Downloaded it from the site. Hope that helps!
