You can perform the Tap 41 Cartridge Health Diagnostics Test: [applies to HP Deskjet 6800/6900/9800]
http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1741 (refer to 2nd video to understand how to read the printed pattern)

1. With printer power on, press and hold the POWER button.
2. Press the Cancel (X) button four (4) times.
3. Press the RESUME button (Down Arrow) once.
4. Release the POWER button.
5. The Diagnostic Test Report should print.

--- A good HP 93/95/97/99 color cartridge should display 600 good nozzles, while a good HP 92/94/96/98 black ink cartridge should show 672 good nozzles. If the results yield anything different then the ink cartridge is likely damaged and will need to be replaced. Refer to 2nd video on how to read the printout: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1741

---- If the printer attempts to print the diagnostic test pattern (1 page) then the printer is generally considered operational and functional, if nothing is printed, but the printer attempts to print the pattern, then the tri-color ink cartridge is either empty, clogged or severely electrically damaged (black ink cartridge is not used). You can remove the tri-color cartridge, reactivate the tap 41 test and the printer will print the diagnostic test print in black ink (special "ink back-up mode").

My Canon Pixma MX850 has two black ink wells, one large and one small. During printing, the printer pulls from the large well first and so when it's empty, I can no longer print in black ink even though...

The small black tank is called "Photo Black Ink Cartridge" and is usually only sed when printing color pages or photos. There is no way to bypass that. Use the ********* ink since it is a cheaper cartridge judging by volume. Sets can be purchased on ebay for very low price. Link below:

My Epson NX415 does not recognize refilled and reset cartridges. What can I do about it?

Don't let your ink levels drop below 25% before refilling and resetting your cartridges. There is an inner and an outer chip on these cartridges. The inner chip disables the outer chip when it's contacts are no longer bathed in ink. So, it doesn't matter if you "reset" the outer chip after refilling your empty cartridge because the chip was disabled. I'm really curious how you refilled these cartridges yourself without souring yourself on refilling from the experience. I own a Cartridge World ink refilling store and I refilled a set of these cartridges when we had replacement chips available (we don't now because our chip distributor was violating Epson patents) and it was an absolute mess, took forever, and the cartridges still didn't work in our test printer.

Printer would recognize black ink i have replace the in three times with brand new cartridges any idea what to do

Sounds like your new cartridges are not being recognized, correct?

If not done already please ensure each cartridge has any plastic packing strips (usually with a colored tab) off the outside of the cartridge. Vendors use these to cover the contacts and/or the print heads for shipping and can be tricky to see.

Otherwise please ensure no ink has spilled or leaked into the slot where your printer cartridge goes. Use good computer cleaning swabs or wipes to remove any ink spill or dirt there. Gold contacts should be clean. Good cleaning wipes or swabs will let you remove dirt and ink but not leave fuzz or strands of cloth in printer. At this time you can also ensure no paper or labels etc are left inside covering gold contacts.

Two black cartridges required??

The printer does recognize 2 different catridges. My understanding is that the smaller is specific to photos,
but the larger is used for everyday text and pages.
I would get the cartridge and then wait to see if the printer
won't print photos when small cardtridge is out. If it does
print, pictures may not be good enough for you.

Printer fail to recognize the ink cartridge

You need to wait longer for the printer to recognize the ink cartridge, but first clear all cartridge error messages on the printer.
