My hp pavillion 503n has a amber light in front...power supply fan comes on but doesnt power up

This could still be a power supply issue. You can buy a power supply tester. This will tell you if the power supply is putting out power to all of the cables.
The other cause of this issue could be a motherboard issue. HP would have to replace the motherboard. A lot of the time HP make their mother boards to fit only their cases. This makes it hard to place a non HP board into a HP case.

I have an hp d530 cmt motherboard with tray & would know if it would fit in an hp xw4100 case. I have not been able to locate a d530 case.

Most mother boards are loosely speaking "one size fits all". The newer the board the smaller generally. You will have to offer it up and see. It may mean you have to move a couple of pillars.
So long as the PSU leads fit, it sholud be OK.

Hp pslp-le mother board

this motherboard will take an add-n serial card (PCI slot) to get your nine pin connection. the hieght that this card can be will be determined by the case room you have inside your particular case.
there are three PCI slots on your motherboard, this is where you install the card if the slots are not used by other cards.
Here is a link to the type of card you need---

Wiring off the tower

The 2 grey wires with the 4 pin connectors would be for the USB ports at the front of the tower. They need to be connected to the motherboard usb pin outs. Usually marked on motherboard as "USB1", "USB2" etc. Generally the red wire should be the "power" and goes to pin1 or 2 on the connector. Pin 1 is normally marked by a thick line on the board at that end of the connector, but it's easier to say Pin1 is the opposite end to the single pin on it's own (which isnt used). You really should check the manual for the board to confirm the connections though.

Hy hp d530 won't turn on

Hello,

I have a similar problem:

My Compaq d530 was running fine until one day during plugging in a USB device (MP3 player) the system completely stopped working. The only thing which is active is the green LED on the mainboard.

I have checked several things and have found the following:
- IDE cable had burn marks!! (nasty)
- USB connection cable which runs from the front to the motherboard has changed in color. (darker green while all other connector have e more light white color.)

These are the signs of a brun out, but I do not have any solution to repair this.

Economically the best thing to do is buy a second hand (or new) system. (d530 are about 60 euros these days (march 2009). Hardware parts can maybe salvaged.

Hp compaq d530 CMT motherboard diagram

You are missing the front headphone / microphone connector that plugs into the motherboard. Or a way to jump this to close the headphones so the sound will come out the back.
