Modem Casn't Get A dile tone

If it is a USB modem, connect it to a different computer, and try it.
If it fails to connect, with _two_ different computers, then the problem is in the modem, not in your HP computer. Give that information to HP.

Or, switch to high-speed "lite" (as in "lite beer"), for about the same amount per month as for dial-up, and throw the modem away.

The modem - and the wireless cards if it's wireless - should come with a software to ensure the system will recognize your internet connection. If your modem is supposed to be wireless, just try and see if your laptop would work with an Ethernet wired connection to test if the modem itself would work with that laptop. If not, then your laptop may have a missing or corrupt component caused by malware. It also depends on the models of your two different laptops. Maybe the one that doesn't pick up the modem is incompatible with the given software. In which case if your machine is clean of malware, then you should contact your ISP and sort out the possible incompatibility issue. Good luck. Please do rate me if any of my ideas work. Thanks

Save yourself alot of grief. Purchase a PCMIA or USB modem and your done. A very inexpensive fix. I am a certified HP Master tech and I will tell you that HP does have some consistent problems withg their modems. If you can spare a few bucks go to www.driveragent.com and try to locate an updated driver.

You may not have the phone cord connected correctly to the modem. Some modem's will have two jacks, one for the phone line and another that you can connect your phone to. Make sure it is securely connected to the wall and modem. I would also use a phone to test the phone line and make sure it is working.

you can downoad the driver from above link. But first check if there is no modem any other modem driver installed which might conflicting with your active modem and query the modem. The instructions are

go to control panel click on phones and modems. a window will open up. click on the modems tab . check whichever modem showing not present select it and remove it. then close it. delete the dialup connection and recreate it. it should work.

There might not be any drivers available for XP, but here is the 98 driver.

You need to identify the exact model number. Here is a link to the dv2700 model drivers just choose your operating system.

The reinstallation probably doesnt use the commponents or support it.

hp has a great drive download area. just search for you model number; pick your OS; download drivers for the modem; then install them

here's some help...go to : start menu,all programmes,accessories,communications and to hyper terminal..type in test, and click o.k.,make sure all the settings are o.k., type in your mobile or your second land line number to test if the modem dials that number.if that test works then contact your i.s.p to check on your account.
