The part by the sink causes water to flow all over the counter

I just moved into a new place with this dishwasher. The first time I tried to use it the metal part that sits next to the sink filled up with water and started spilling onto the counter. I am not sure if it was supposed to be spilling into the sink, but it went everywhere so we just stopped the wash cycle. What do I need to do to fix this?

Thank you for responding. There is a disposal, but it works fine and the sink drains.

Thank you for your help... I've never owned a dishwasher before.

Almost all dishwashers connect to the sink drain in one way or another. Many connect (via an Air Gap valve) to a garbage disposal.
If the "metal part" is at the rear of the sink, that is the top of the air gap. When water comes out of it, that means the drain is plugged.
If there is a garbage disposal, does water drain through it? Does the disposal work?
If there is no disposal, does water from the faucet run through the drain of each sink with no problem?
Thanks for answering these questions in a reply.

Then look at the drain hose that goes from the air gap valve directly to the side connector on the disposal. I bet it is plugged up.

    Good LucK!

My dishwsaher wont drain water

Two things to consider....clean water or dirty water?

Clean water usually indicates the fill valve is not shutting off all the way and the fill valve is "weeping" water in all the time = new fill valve time!!

Dirty water usually is not a dishwasher problem but more of a plumbing issue. Often the sink drain that carries the sinks water outside is not fast enough and some of this sink water is backing up into the drain hose and filling up the dishwasher through the drain hose. The drain from the sink to outside needs attention as this type of a problem indicates a slow house drain for that sink.

The dishwasher drain line should be clamped to the top underneath part of the counter before entering the sink drain plumbing, this may help the water from coming back inside the dishwasher.

Water is coming out of air flow gap. I installed a new air-flow gap and all new lines from air flow gap to sink (except the line from dishwasher to air flow gap) and i still have water coming out the air...

The leak in an air gap is usually caused by a clogged sink discharge line. Most of the time this is connected to the garbage disposal and there is food particulate in the drain hole where the dishwasher drain from the air gap to the garbage disposal connects.

Pull the sink connection hose off and clean the hole thoroughly. You can try testing the dishwasher/ air gap by placing the disconnected hose into a bucket during the pump out period. It should not leak. After this test...reconnect the hose to the sink connection.

If it is NOT connected to the garbage disposal then remove the hose and clean out the hole where the connection is made. This is a common problem and easily resolved by the user.

Dishwasher doesn't drain completely after full cycle

If there is any blockage in your diposal, water will comes up to the sink, since it happened to me. As soon I installed the air gap then it fixed the problem. No air gap, water flowing is slowing down conflicting with timed draining causing this problem. Let's think of this, if you fill up water in a 1/2 galon milk container, and you try to emty it. If you pull down straightly , it will be slow compared to pull it at an agle to let air going into the opening. The air vent helps water flow better meeting the timed draining.

Water gets into disher when not inuse

dishwasher drain enters sewer system tapped into waste pipe below kitchen sink
water flowing from kitchen sink passes the opening of the dishwasher pipe
If the dishwasher hose does not loop up higher than the kitchen sink before going down to the bottom of the dishwasher water may flow downhill through the dishwasher drain into the dishwasher
ensure the dishwasher drain hose is screwed to the underside of the kitchen counter, to provide a stop to water flow.
The installation instructions suggest this
but often the dishwasher is at the end of its 'stretch'
and the installer assumes looping is just to use up excess hose, and doesnt.
an extension drain hose is available at most appliance stores
