if you are confident enough to take the unit apart you can remove the rubber button pad and clean the surface of the circuit board
with q tips and reassemble the unit. They get dirty over time.
Most units have screws at the bottom back or in the battery compartment. Be careful not to tear the rubber contacts(pad)
Try maplin...there are a number of 'ONE FOR ALL' remote controls which will do your tv, radio, sky box, cable what you will have to do is program it with the codes for the particular item. the codes are usually supplied in the user manual with the remote.
20839 is the DirecTV & Access HD universal remote code for Mintek, Shinsonic, & US Logic. None of which brands are listed in my Yamaha RAV283 remote code list (uses 4-digit codes).
20717 is also listed for Mintek by DirecTV. Other brands with the same code on DirecTV remote are: Apex, Blaupunkt, GE, Greenhill, Initial, KLH, Nesa, & RCA.
Of those brands, only Apex & RCA are listed in my Yamaha remote's list. I tried all of the codes for those 2 brands under types DVD, DVD Recorder, DVD/VCR, & TV/DVD. None worked. It appears to me that only those 3 brands for 20839 share the same remote code settings. If your remote doesn't support any of those 3, I doubt you will be able to use that particular remote with the Mintek DVD-1600.
I hope my research helps someone with this, as it was unfruitful for myself. Good Luck!
- Single item, or fixed. This unit will only operate the unit it came with - Multi function, this type can operate the unit it came with and a fixed set of other types. Normally the remote comes with a list of supported device it could work with. - Learning, the combine both a predefined list with the ability to learn functions by sensing input from the original remote. - Programable. These are the newest remotes that work like multifunction but the list is maintained by the manufacturer and down loadable from the web.
I would guess that the DVR has a multi function remote. If you can't find the specific Yamaha in the list, then try another brand, this could take a while.
Some multi function remotes have an option that allow a semi automatic configuration. You turn on the item and then using a special key sequence try to turn off the device. once the item turns off you should be able to control it.
If you can't the Yamaha has a learning remote. If you really want an easy solution try looking at a programmable remote. I just got a Logitech, (Harrmony). Life has never been so easy.
