Garmin is telling you to update your Map, its wants you to buy a New Map which cost around 50 or 60 dollars.....your unit will work find for now unless you need the new map 2011 it just has the newer streets and highways. Anything over 2 years old should have a newer Map..
With the gps Off
plug in your gps to your computer using a USB cable (most cameras connect to your computer with the same usb cable)
your computer with detect new hardware ( usb ) a pop up box will come up, minimise it
next
go to www.MyGarmin.com the Garmin site will detect your pluged-in unit and let your update your Map
It will say to download WebUpDater utility to transfer your map to your gps
Make sure you register your unit with Garmin at that time
The Garmin GPS are among the easiest to use and they have the most complete mapping on the market. To update the mapping, there are several versions of the software integrated into these road gps. To name a few, city navigator version 8 and City Navigator 2008. With a newer version, you have the most recently built streets, new shops, new parking lots, etc.. To update, there are several ways to proceed. First, before you update your maps, I recommend you check if there is a newer version of the maps, visit garmin and download the plugin. You can also view the maps version directly on your gps.
Pre-Installed Maps: Set up of the Easy Street Navigation System is simple because there's no software to download. Maps are pre-loaded and ready to go. Map data covers the US, including Alaska and Hawaii, Canada and Puerto Rico.
SANYO NVM-4370 Map Update DVD North America 2009-2010: Get accurate directions to wherever you travel including new roads, new sub-divisions, and current addresses. New and expanded coverage in over 159 cities, counties and metropolitan areas across the continental United States and Canada including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. You can confidently drive through unfamiliar or recently changed areas. This latest edition features over 6.18 million miles of navigable roads and an updated list of over 7.57 million Points of Interest to help you find the way to where you want to go quickly and efficiently.
You are confusing map updates with POIs (Points of Interest). Garmin does not keep up with restaurant openings and closings, to the best of my knowledge. Updating your maps will give you the latest street information (such as new subdevelopments, one-way streets, newly opened bridges, etc.) but will not let you know that the KFC closed or that the Chalet de Alpina closed last year. Your POI information is current as of the initial programming of your unit. You can enter POIs manually, if you chose to do so, but they will only be good as long as you keep up with them.
I'm assuming you have the right map installed.Make sure you type in the right city (town/village). Make sure you are spelling the street name correctly.
If your street has been there for more than a year then it may be a map error. Try browsing the map in the area where you live to see if you you can find your street and see how it is spelt. It may be spelt incorrectly on the map. You can correct an incorrect spelling. See the manual for map corrections.
Newer streets may not be included on your current map. You may have to wait for an update or you can buy an update or you can use the map corrections to add your street. See the manual. HTH Peter
You can add in a mapful of congestion/construction warnings for the existing map, using a CF card and some street & map program. Just use a generic prefix for the congestion so you can tell it's your note.
You should definitely send feedback to Garmin about how the streets end (maybe linking to a Flickr group full of pictures of how the streets are not passable,) so that they can update their maps. Speaking of that, you can also check that you have the current 'firmware' (and maps) for your city with their update tools.
What city did they not get good satellite photos of? Lucerne?
The only way to update the maps is to purchase new maps from Garmin and download them via the computer. The 2008 map updates are currently available, and Garmin has told me new maps will be out in a few months.
