Toshiba 32AF45 Black Rectangle Issue

My Toshiba 32AF45 has a black rectangle box show up and covers the lower half of my screen. It shows up out of nowhere on any channel. I know it is not my cable provider because it doesn't happen on a tv I have in another room. Any ideas on fix for this problem?

Go into your menu and find closed caption, someone has accidently set the closed caption mode to text, when the on screen display of channel or volume goes away the box appears. turn off the closed caption feature or switch it to something other than "text" mode, and your box will go away.

My 32 lcd tv a black rectangle apears on aprox,

If it is a large black rectangle that blots out the middle of the screen then you need to check your CC (closed caption) setting. Make sure the closed caption is turned off. I'm not up to date on the newer sets, but a lot of the older ones had more than one CC setting. One setting ran the captioning across the bottom, another put it in a big black box in the center of the screen. Most places didn't support the full text so all that showed was a big black rectangle on the screen. Since I'm not sure exactly what your rectangle looks like, this is my best estimate of your problem. Hope this helps.

Black rectangle on the screen

That sounds like the Closed Caption function is turned on. Go to the menu and turn it off if it is on.

Black rectangle on screen

The box you're seeing is the "closed caption' box. You need to use the remote and disable CC mode on it, and the box will go away :)

Large Black rectangle on bottom half of screen

My mother-in-law had this problem on a Quasar for two years before she finally mentioned it. The rectangle is a text box for closed captioning or for a demonstation list of features, but without the text. I restored the factory presets and poof... problem solved.

Look in the manual and find how to restore the factory settings - it will probably be some weird combination of buttons that you would never guess. On her set, which has a built-in VCR, it was simultaneously pressing "play" and "FF" (on the set, not the remote) for five seconds until the set powered down. Yours will probably be something different but equally odd. That should get rid of the black rectangle. Then you go through the initial setup and you're back in business.

Black Rectangle on lower half of TV screen.

Turn off the closed captioning feature. If a channel or program doesn't provide the captioning, all you get is the black box. Just find the menu page for that and change the setup.
