How to change settings in Outlook to delete message from server after downloading

Hi, follow the steps below. Don't change any of your settings since they already work, but when you get to step 7 this is where you check whether or not you want to remove the emails from the sever.

Open Outlook 2003 then:
  1. Click Tools ' E-mail Accounts.
  2. Select Add a new e-mail account and click Next.
  3. Select POP3, then click Next.
  4. Enter the following information:
    • User Information
      • Your Name: Type your name as you'd like it to appear when you send an email message.
      • E-mail Address: Type your Yahoo! Mail Plus email address (for example, [email protected]).
    • Server Information

    • Login Information
      • User Name: Type your Yahoo! ID (your email address without the "@yahoo.com").
      • Password: Type your Yahoo! password.
    • Check the Remember password checkbox if you don't want Outlook to prompt you for your password each time you check your mail.

Can't send outgoing E-mail, connection to server fails Protocol SMTP Port 502 Server(SSL) Yes .Socket error 10060 Error 0x800ccc0 E

You need to change your port for your outgoing mail server. If it's yahoo you are using you need to use the following settings in outlook:
Yahoo Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 465)
Yahoo Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - smtp.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 995)

You have it set to port 502, it should be set to 995.
If you are using Outlook 2010 click on "File" and "Info" on the left. Click on the Account Settings box and find your yahoo mail account.
Double click on your account and in the box that pops up, you will see a button on the bottom left of it that says "More settings." click on that.
Click on the "Advanced" tab that you will see to the very right and change the setting for your outgoing server. It should say 502 in the text box. Change it from 502 to 995.

I am tying to set up yahoo account on thunderbird. i can send email but not receive.. i have tried changing server settings and port settings

Much more common is a sending issue. Often you have to send through your ISP server, contact them for what that server is, if you have sending issues.

I found directions for Outlook, which should be similar to Thunderbird:

Look closely at requires authentication settings....

Note: You must be a Yahoo! Mail Plus user to read Yahoo! Mail in an email reader program such as Microsoft Outlook. Click here for information about subscribing to Yahoo! Mail Plus.
To read your Yahoo! Mail Plus using Microsoft Outlook 2002 or 2003, follow these steps:
  1. From the Tools menu, select Email Accounts.
  2. Select Add a new email account and click Next.
  3. Select POP3 and click Next.
  4. Enter the following information:
    • User Information

Your Name: Type your name as you'd like it to appear when you send an email message.

E-Mail Address: Type your Yahoo! Mail Plus email address (for example, [email protected]).
    • Server Information

Incoming mail server (POP3): Type plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com.

Outgoing mail server (SMTP): Type plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com.
    • Login Information

User Name: Type your Yahoo! ID (your email address without the "@yahoo.com").

      Password: Type your Yahoo! password.
    • Select the Remember Password checkbox if you don't want Outlook to prompt you for your password each time you check your mail.
    • Do not select the Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) checkbox.
  5. Click More Settings. The Internet E-mail Settings dialog box appears.
  6. Select the Outgoing Server tab:
    • Select the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication checkbox.
    • Make sure that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.
  7. Click the Advanced tab:
    • Under Incoming Server (POP3), select the This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) checkbox. The number in the Incoming Server (POP3) field usually changes automatically from 110 to 995. If it doesn't, type 995.
    • In the Outgoing Server (SMTP) field, type 465. Under Outgoing Server (SMTP), select the This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) checkbox.
    • If you want to save your Yahoo! Mail messages on both the Yahoo! Mail server and on your computer, select the Leave a copy of messages on the server checkbox. If you want your messages to be deleted from the Yahoo! server once Outlook has downloaded them onto your computer, leave the box unchecked.

Note: After your messages are deleted from the server, we cannot retrieve them.
  8. Click OK to close the Internet E-mail Settings dialog box.
  9. Click Finish to close the Add New E-mail Account dialog box.
  10. Click Close to close the Account Settings dialog box.
Troubleshooting tips
If you still can't send Yahoo! Mail from Outlook, you might be accessing the Internet through an ISP that is blocking the SMTP port. If this is the case, try using port 587 when sending email via Yahoo!'s SMTP server. To make this change:
  1. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings. The Account Settings dialog box appears.
  2. Select your Yahoo! Mail Plus account and click Properties. The Change E-mail Account dialog box appears.
  3. Click More Settings. The Internet E-mail Settings dialog box appears.
  4. Click the Advanced tab.
  5. In the Outgoing Server (SMTP) box, type 587.
  6. Click Apply, and then click OK to close the Internet E-mail Settings dialog box.
  7. Click Close to close the Account Settings dialog box.

Trying to set up outlook but dont know incoming and outgoing servers how do i find out

The incoming and outgoing mail servers are going to be the ones used by your ISP(internet service provider:Time Warner,Verizon, ect) if you use their mail service or a web based service(Yahoo,MSN,ect). So you can first start with your actual e-mail address. If your e-mail address is [email protected] then you e-mail provider is yahoo. You will then need to goto the website for your e-mail provider and get the incoming and outgoing e-mail server info from them. You will also need your username and password for your e-mail account. Then set up a new e-mail account on outlook express using the information. Also some mail servers require authentication so you might need to configure those settings on outlook exprerss also.
