The little red light by the power button is on but the TV will not turn on

I would suspect a problem in either the backlight assembly, or the power supply that drives it. If it's the power supply, the part may be over $100.

That series of Samsung TV is covered by a class action lawsuit settlement over bad capacitors on the power supply board that were installed in those units. Under the terms of the settlement Samsung will repair any power supply even if the unit is out of standard warranty. You can get more details on the settlement here:
