My top load washer fills and then stops. It can only be started by slamming the lid and then runs smoothly through the remainder of the washing process.

I have to slam my lid on my washing machine when it fills up. After you slam it, runs fine.

Washer won't agitate unless you slam the door shut or wiggle the door back and forth . . . getting harder and harder to get it to start. Wanted to post so others know that this seems to be a common problem.

I fixed mine with a toothpick and a piece tape. Make the tab on the door longer that activates the switch. Try triming the lid bumpers

The washer turns on, fills with water, then stops. Agitation won't start unless you slam the lid or sometimes if you "nudge" the setting forward and then pull out and then in.

Sounds like door switch may be failing, or the wiring between door switch and timer has loose connection. You can replace the switch or check ther wiring, or bypass the door switch circuit by jumping the leads at the timer

Top loader washing machine - won't work unless I slam down the top door. Any suggestions? Thanks

I think it is in the lid switch. If the lid switch is malfunctioning on a maytag top loader it will not start washing. Probably by slamming the lid you are making the connection you need for the time being. It is located at the back underneath the lid in the middle. Follow the link and you will see and diagram and parts associated with your washer. http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getSubComp.pd?modelNumber=A4910&productCategoryId=0153000&brandId=3048&modelName=MAYTAG-LAUNDRY&diagramPageId=00002&componentDescription=TOP COVER, CONSOLE & LID SWITCH

Must repeatedly slam top loading door shut for machine to start

on the inside of the lid there is a lid switch hole that a plastic tab goes down through the switch could be bad or the screws holding the switch in could be lose or broken

The switch that makes it think it's closed is broken.

You are referring to the lid switch. If it's visible, try tightening the screws that hold it to the cabinet (they may be loose and the lid strike can't engage the switch properly). If you can, feel underneath where the lid switch is located and see if it's broken from where it mounts (feels loose). Push the lid switch lever down, if it doesn't "click" or doesn't start the wash, replace the lid switch and you should be good to go.
If you want, post your model number to make sure it's the model I'm thinking of and I can also try and get you the part number for the lid switch.
