Read This, then get a new cable.
K first off this is an utterly pointless error that caused me to loose valuable files, info, and time.
I was using my ipod and it had been running into a few problems. Such as the time being wrong etc. I plugged it into iTunes
and it wouldnt show up. I tried over and over without success. SO
eventually i decided to put it into reovery mode. I plugged it into
iTunes, it saw it and that it was in recovery. I clicked restore and
everything went fine untill it got to actually updating the software. I got error code 6 and error code 2003.
I found a tip to restart iTunes a couple times so i did without
success. I then found another article talking about battery charges and
cheap caples when i got a hunch. The night before i had added an
extention cable to my ipod cable
so that i could run it to my bed. I pluged the normal ipod caple
straight into my computer, hit restore and BAM it worked. Thus I
realied that there was no need for me to recover my ipod because let me
tell you, 14 gigs of music and videos takes a LONG time to copy to my
ipod.
If you have the same problem try this:
1. DO NOT GO INTO RECOVRY MODE
2. Make sure you have the ipod directly connected to your computer (no extensions or hubs)
3. Restart iTunes a few times
4. If all else fails enter recovry mode and hope for the best
my ipod wont restore becuse of error 2003 how do - user_offline.gifoads/images/user_offline.gif" alt="user_offline.gif" class="h_mi" />
OMG THANK YOU SO FREAKING MUCH I WAS TRYING TO RESTORE THIS ALL NIGHT AND IT WOULDNT WORK. ALL IT TOOK WAS DISCONNECTING ONE WIRE AND RECONNECTING ANOTHER WIRE -_- the apple guy and i were on the phone forever and still couldnt get it to work. he even had me remove and redownload everything apple. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Had the 2003 error - and decided to try the cable straight into the PC USB por rather than a USB hub - worked first time. Great advice.
THANK YOU! I had just about resigned myself to a week-long trip with a grumpy iPod-less teenager! ;-) Plugging it in directly to the computer instead of through a hub was all it took! Wish I had the last few hours back, but at least the next week will be better! :-)
merci beaucoup sa marche xa ma fait garder ma tune!! je vous remercie beaucoup
OH MY GUAD!!!!!!! I Can't Believe my iris, pupil and oh my eyes. whaaaat? this actually fixed it after 3 Days of struggeling. THANKS A MILLION!!!! U Are Blessed.

Recently, Apple users flock to download the latest iOS on their iOS devices. However, when upgrading their iPhone/iPad/iPod touch to the latest iOS, some users are frustrated by the "Software Update Failed" error. After the uses click "Agree" on the terms and conditions page of the OTA update, the "Software Update Failed" error message pops up. So what on earth is going wrong when the error happens? And what should we do when software update failed in upgrading the latest iOS?
Though there is no official explanation given by Apple about why software update failed, it is speculated that the error comes up possibly because the installation and authentication servers of Apple are failed to take up so many download requests simultaneously. That is to say, some users experience the error when too many users try to upgrade the latest iOS at the same time. Therefore, this is probably a problem that Apple should pay attention to. Before Apple actually works on the problem, I have solutions that may help with the error.
Solution 1 Check the Network Connectivity
Solution 2 Upgrading iOS Later
Solution 3 Fix Apple Software Update Error Via FoneDog

There are many iPod error icons with exclamation marks
The Sad iPod icon ( ) usually means that the iPod can't access it's Hard Drive. I've seen that hitting the ipod on a soft surface occasionally fixes this. You may need to take the iPod for repair
The Folder Error icon () may mean the battery is low, the ipod needs to be reset, restored or needs a service
The Battery Icon () usually means the battery needs charging
means a disk scan failed and will be repeated when the ipod is turned on or reset.
Try restoring it continuouly until it does (eventually worked for mine)
if it is anything else, your iPod may need repair.
Good Luck!
