pH Scale
Examples of solutions on the
pH Scale compared to distilled water are set out below:
- pH = 0 => Battery Acid which is very strong Hydroflouric Acid
- pH = 1 => Hydrochloric Acid secreted by stomach lining
- pH = 2 => Lemon Juice, Gastric Acid, Vinegar
- pH = 3 => Grapefruit Juice, Orange Juice, Soda
- pH = 4 => Tomato Juice, Acid Rain
- pH = 5 => Soft Drinking Water, Black Coffee
- pH = 6 => *****, Saliva
- pH = 7 => "Pure" Water
- pH = 8 => Sea Water
- pH = 9 => Baking Soda
- pH = 10 => Great Salt Lake, Milk of Magnesia
- pH = 11 => Amonia Solution
- pH = 12 => Soapy Water
- pH = 13 => Bleach, Oven Cleaner
- pH = 14 => Liquid Drain Cleaner such as "Draino"
pH Scale Numbers
This scale is
logarithmic. It means that each number is 10 times stronger than the preceding
number. For example, a pH of 2 is ten times more acidic than a pH of 3 and one
hundred times more acidic than a pH of 4. It is important to monitor pH because
live depends on it. For instance, human blood is basic with a pH between 7.3 and
7.5. If the pH of blood drops below 7.3, acidosis occurs. If the blood pH rises
above 7.5, alkalosis occurs. Death will occur if blood pH goes below 7.0 or
above 7.8. Our human existence depends upon a balanced and buffered blood
pH.
