My hand held Panasonic phone keeps saying move closer to base and try again. When I do that, it still doesnt work. When I hang it up, the screen says line in use. Any ideas.
Either the phone is not registered to the base unit or the RF module is broken. It could be a bad battery but unlikely unless very old or you have not charged it.
You should check the manual for registering the phone to the base unit.

Set the phone on the charging cradle and press the ON button while phone is in crade. You may need to use the speakerphone button to do this. Turning the phone on while in the charging cradle will resync your handset with its base. Try it! It should work!
Hand each phone up on the base and it will marry it. If you continue to have no link to base make sure everything is plugged in correctly. If it persists you probably have a defective phone.
We tried doing what it said in the manual on page 54. That didn't work! She then decided to just unplug everything. About 3-5 minutes later, plugged everything back in, and lo and behold, everything was working fine!!
Your getting this message because the radio portion of the handset or/and base is not communicating with each other. This can be temporary or fatal. You can try re-registering the handset(s) to the base by following the directions in the manual, its fairly easy to do for any model. If that does not work, and you have more than one handset not working with this problem, then it sounds as if your base needs repair or replacing.
