Water overflows from dishwasher.

The overflow happens at the beginning of the first cycle.

It is a Kitchen Aid model # KUDJ230Y3 installed in 1994

We attempted to run the dishwasher and all it did was continue to fill with hot water water and overflow

    CYCLE SELECTION - NORMAL
    WASH SELECTION - NORMAL

If the overflow is due to the switch, where is the switch located?

    Thank you.

  • Robert A. Foberg Apr 11, 2009

Are you referring to the left front of the dishwasher. There is an upside down cone-shaped plastic object. I am able to lift it up to a point where it stops, then a second pull removes it. It has a plastic extension about 4 inches long and somewhat narrower than the width of an electric chord. It doesn't seem as though this would activate/deactivate the switch.

    Thanks.

  • Robert A. Foberg Apr 11, 2009

WOW!! that will be easy to replace. I am out of state until sometime on Sunday. I can't wait to fix it...and my wife said...it's time for a new dishwasher,,,huh!!! Thank you so much for your time and the free advice!!!!!!!!! I will let you know how I make out.

The most common cause of a Sears Kenmore dishwasher over flowing is a fail "float" switch that detects when the water has reached the proper level.
If you want more directions, please post back here and we will take the next steps. OK?

When you open your dishwasher, under the lower basket, there should be a round object that moved slightly when you lift it. Maybe you hear a clicking sound when you raise and lower it. That is called the float. There is a switch underneath it.

Take a look at this diagram and your will see parts item # 11 - 15 are what you need to focus on.

Good Luck! Please update me with what you find.

  • Jeff Meyer Apr 11, 2009

Well Done! You described the float far better than I could.

When the dishwasher is empty and the timer tells the inlet valve to open and allow water to enter the dishwasher, that float sits there until the water level lifts it (hence the name "float" :-)

When the level gets to the proper level, the extension of the float moves and opens a switch. That ~should~ cause the inlet valve to close. The most common failure is that switch. It is accessible from underneath the front, left side of the dishwasher. Behind the removable kick plate.

Post back here what you find, OK?

Cool! Good luck with the repair.

After you repair the dishwasher float problem, run a short cycle empty with no detergent. Wait for the water to finish filling and the wash cycle just begins. Add two cups white vinegar. Check how clean it is an repeat during the next wash cycle if it still has any deposits.

Make sure you are using only a name brand detergent (like Electrosol or Cascade) and keep the rinse aid compartment filled. Unlike most generic products, taking a short cut with ultra-cheap detergent powder will give poor results. Also, never use gel or tablet detergents. They build up "gunk over the weeks and months that reduces washing power.

Then your wife will feel like she does have an (almost) new dishwasher. "If mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!" :-)

    Good Luck!

You will want to either look for enamel paint on line or go to a trusted hardware store and ask them about what they would recommend for repairing a bathtub (Which is not plastic, like this dishwasher.)

Once you have the paint they recommend in hand (you won't need much) then you prepare the chips by sanding them and applying any recommended primer / final coat. Watch how deep you have to sand to remove the corrosion because if it is too deep, it is time to go shopping for a replacement dishwasher before this one springs a leak, someday.

    Good Luck!

Samsung dishwasher DMT300RFW "Case brake assembly" is overflowing

Yeah, you're probably going to have to replace that case-brake assembly. Fortunately, they're not very expensive. Check with SearsPartsDirect.com or RepairClinic.com

Whirpool dishwasher overflowing water

If during the wash cycle your dishwasher overflows it could be
because the float is sticking. It is on the front right and has a switch so
that when it floats high enough the water stops.

Dishwasher is stuck in one cycle and will not go to the next. I believe it may be the drain cycle. Turning the knob does not help. A year or so I experienced the same problem which I believe may have...

Most Viking models have overflow safety feature that turns the dishwasher into drain mode. The idea is to remove overflow water from the bottom pan. Check the pan behind kick toe panel for water, remove the water and check for leaks. If no water check overflow switch somewhere in the pan, it maybe stuck. Good luck

Opened lid during wash cycle. Machine stopped but later restarted. The same thing happened two weeks later, but the touchpad has no function. It is getting electrical power to the dishwasher. Thoughts?

Ok so your dishwasher won't do anything... it justs sits there and "Hums" you can't make it respond to any controls, and the ONLY way to Stop it. is to unplug the unit, replugging back in it simply "Hums" again and will do nothing.
Now this happens because, the STOP Button, is pressed and the "Door Opened", during the Wash Cycle. This should NOT be done. You shouldNEVER TURN IT OFF MID-CYCLE. you should instead, Simply, pull on the handle, to Open the door, the system will take care of everything, after, you close it,and pick up where it left off. The turning OFF, makes the machine "Think" that a New Cycle, is going to be done, before the old one is finished, and resets itself to do it all again. But it still has water, that's not meant to be there so it must dump it out.
Now, the FIX. Take the Dishwasher, out, and tip over on it's side, tip to about a 45' angle. Water will come out from underneath, this is from a small "Overflow" reservoir. this reservoir has an "Anti-Flood" switch. The removing of this water will "Reset" this Switch, and allow the dishwasher to work again.
So what happens, is this, when the STOP button is pressed Mid-Cycle, the machine must "Dump" whatever water is still in the machine, into the "Overflow Reservoir". This water then causes the Anti-flood switch to jam, and this stops the machine, until it is reset,by the above method.

Whirlpool Gold dishwasher water overflowing and will not shut off

There should be a dome shaped float switch on the inside bottom of the washer. Make sure it is free to move up and down, or is able to float (possibly cracked or broken).

Dishwasher overflows

Sounds like you've got a problem with the water intake valve(s). If it takes on water without water running in the sink, that is where I would look. If it happens when you use the sink, then I would also check your drain hose placement

Water overflows from dishwasher during wash cycle

Food or debris could be blocking the drain line before the water pump or after. So unplug the unit or cut the power to it then begin working on the washer. You will need a pliers or medium size channel locks to take the hose clamps off. Make sure the line is clear from the unit to the water pump. Then check the pump over carefully. Then the line from to the discharge area. This should solve the problem.
