Well of course I left fuel in the tank when I stored my mower and now it will not turn over. It started then about 30 seconds later cut out. I pulled out the fuel tank and completely drained it. Installed a new fuel filter (in-line). I checked the spark plug and it is in good shape. I checked to see if the spark plug wire is putting out a spark and it is. I also loosened up the nut on the bottom of the carb to drain out any old gas in there. Still nothing. Is there a way to prime the engine on this mower? I noticed after cranking it a few times that no fuel appears to be in fuel filter. i Know the fuel line isnt clogged because i cleaned it out. is there some sort of fuel pump in the tank? I have no idea what else to do. just trying to avoid taking it to get serviced. Thanks in advance.
Toro Timecutter Z4200 mounts gas tank under
seat and below carburetor. After first started, Z4200 will start
OK again during mowing this period. But after some time passes
(next mowing), gas evaporates from carburetor. Can run down
battery using battery/starter getting gas backup through carburetor to
start engine. This is poor Toro design, but good for service
charges when replacing good components while trying to fix this problem.
Better solution is to add an outboard motor
one-way squeeze bulb (approx. $15) between the fuel filter and the
carburetor. Using the squeeze bulb for first start will prime the
motor so that it will start without having to crank so long (which Toro
says will burn up the starter). Toro saves $15/mower as well as
selling new Z4200 starters.
First check to see if there is a fuel shutoff under the tank. On some models there is a fuel filter screen inside the tank where the fuel line connects to the tank. If niether of these work, R&R the carb.
Did you fix it? Happened to me and what I found out on top of fuel tank there is a brass fitting that goes into the tank. The fuel is picked by a line about 4 inches long that had dissolved, it just melted away. Replaced and it fired right up. P.S. only pull uo fitting ! Try to leave rubber grommet on tank, if it pulls up separate them and install grommet then fitting with 4 inch tube.
To check everything from tank to fuel pump, you can disconnect hose going from pump to carb and then crank the engine. If fuel spits out I guess it's all good. Be careful with fuel that comes out.

ok, here is what i have done. I have taken off every fuel line and
cleaned them out, even the one inside the tank. i removed the carb and
cleaned it. took off the fuel pump and cleaned it. i manually primed it
by putting fuel into the carb. it kicks over, but cuts off like 5
seconds later. I have sprayed starting fluid in the spark plug slot and once again it turns over and cuts right back off. I am at my wits end, but I know if I take it to the service center up the street they are going to rape me. ( i have had bad experiences with them). the mower is less than a year old. I am sure the fuel system is pressurized so if it is not getting fuel from the tank to the carb, could it be the pump? the fuel filter is empty and it is right after the tank then it is the fuel pump. I dont know how the fuel pump works on a mower cuz it is obviously not electric like most cars, so i am assuming it creates some sort of siphon to get fuel from the tank to the carb. any advice would help.
I had the same problem.needed new carburator and new fuel pump..had to get it serviced
I think I have the same problem (though I got seven years out of it before this). Did it end up being the fuel pump?
