SOURCE: I need to know how

Call your phone, let the outgoing message play when the machine answers, and wait for the beep. After the beep, enter the 3-digit security code you'll find on a sticker on the bottom of the machine. The machine will beep twice to let you know you entered the right code and it's ready for your commands.

Remote commands:

1# Plays messages in mailbox 1
2# Plays messages in mailbox 2
3# Deletes old messages (you need to play them all back first)
7# Starts recording a new outgoing message (press 7# again to stop recording)
9# Turn the system on or off
0# Monitor the room

While you're playing messages (you pressed either 1# or 2#) you have these commands:

3# Erase current message
6# Repeat previous message
7# Skip to next message
8# Repeat current message
## Stop playback

After your messages have played, you have 20 seconds to enter another command before the machine disconnects automatically.

You can download the manual here so you'll have a copy for future reference.

Hi my hp 640 will not answer a fax call, but will answer only if we pick up the hand set.

Issue When the all-in-one product is sharing a phone line with voice calls, some calls are interrupted by fax tones. Follow the steps below to solve the problem.Step one: Check the Rings to Answer setting If Auto Answer is enabled, the HP fax product will answer the phone line when the number of rings reaches the number of rings specified in the Rings-to-Answer setting. When voice calls will be received on the same phone line as faxes, set to rings-to-answer to 6. If you do not want the fax to answer automatically, either turn off Auto Answer from the front panel and receive faxes manually (this may result in lost faxes) or subscribe to a distinctive ring service from the phone company (if available). Refer to the Answering faxes manually section below to learn how to answer faxes manually or refer to the Using distinctive ringing section below for more information about using distinctive ringing. The Rings-to-answer setting for the HP Officejet 500 and 600 series products can only be checked or set using the all-in-one software on the computer. Will not receive incoming fax. Everything tests OK

First, Connect the Phone line in Line 1 EXT at back of printer

Check the No. of Rings on your Answer machine.
If you have 4 Rings set on Answer machine then you need to set 6 Rings on the printer ( as simple 2 rings more than your Answer machine )
And you need to turn off ECM on the Printer setup

Press Setup button
Scroll till you find Fax Settings - Press OK
Choose Rings to Answer - Set it - 6 ( based on the Rings on Answer machine ) - Press OK
Check for ECM - Error Correction Mode - Press OK
Turn it OFF - Press OK
Check for Auto Answer option - Turn it ON too.

Try to receive Fax.. it should come thru.

When a fax is coming through my machines says failed to connect, what is the problem?

hello sorry we got disconnected but please try this
Based on what I read in the Dell manual I would say the answering machine needs to pick up the line first so the number of rings to answer for the answering machine needs to be less than the rings for the printer (if you set the answer machine to pick on on the second ring set the printer for 3 rings).

Basically this looks like it works similar to other phone line sharing devices, if the manual is correct when the answer machine picks up the printer/fax is supposed to listen to the line, originating fax machines send what is called a CNG tone.

Looks like the machine listens for this tone, if it sees it then it is supposed to cut off the answer machine and complete its fax function, if the tone is not present the Dell should let the answer machine work normally.

From working with phone line sharing devices I have seen most problems occur in the home where people have a single line coming in and they tap off of that line and run jacks to all the rooms in the house.

This creates a problem, when you plug phones or answer machines orfax machines or modems or anything else these devices all have a Ringer Equivalency Number associated with them, the phone company also limites the number of bells (ringer equivalency) on the line.

If the phone company supports 3 bells for example and you connect 2 devices that have a ringer equivalnecy number of 3 that is 6 bells and something is not going to work correctly.

If you can make the answering machine work by itself and you can make the fax feature on the printer work by itself and the problem only shows up when they are connected together then I would think you have either exceeded the number of bells for your line, or Dell has an issue with their feature.

I would suggest as a test if you have in fact tapped off the telephone company line, unplug all of the other phones in the house and just conenct the printer and answer mchine as Dell suggests and see what happens, if it works then you have to decide what phone or phones you are willing to leave unplugged.

If you have bell answer that will be the reason not working. Get rid of bell answer and save over a hundred a year and get yourself an answer machine. If you dont have bell answer then check your manual for correct set up.
