You essentially have to reset the GPS. You can do this by holding the power button down for at least four seconds to get the Tom Tom to fully shutdown. You will know you successfully did this if you hear the tom tom sound and a warning message appears during startup. It then seems to work just fine after that.

GPS is not working. It says waiting for a valid GPS signal. What can I do to fix this?

Usually, when it's waiting to get a valid GPS signal, it is "listening" (scanning) for satellite signals to establish your current location. If you are in the open outdoors, i.e. not inside a building or under extended covers, it should get the satellite signals within a minute or so.

Tomtom can't get signal

Try to reset it, make sure it is switched off remove the sd card, get a pin or clip and place it in the small reset hole at the bottom of the devise for 15 seconds, then switch the unit back on and replace the sd card and hopefully it should come to life

Can't get any directions, just keeps on saying "waiting for valid GPS signal" been like this all day. Thanks. Ron

charge it up good for a few hours, preferably the usb cord to your computer, then power it on and take it outside in full view of the open sky and let it aquire the satellites (up to 30 minutes)

if that fails, let me know and we can try a reset and update.

Waiting for valid gps signal

Try resetting your device. Depending on the model you have, this is done by either using the pin or holding down the power button for about 15 - 30 seconds. You'll know the reset has been successful when the legal agreement come up when it comes back on. Once this is done, go outside and on the device, go to the satellite detail screen and wait until several (about 4) of the bars are 75% or higher (they should change colors). You should go the the regular screen after that and you should be able to navigate again.

Just says waiting for gps signal

Tom Tom needs comms with GPS satellites orbiting the earth.

Make sure you are outside your home so the GPS can find these signals. Initially it may take up to 5 minutes to make these connections. One the satnav knows where it is, all subsequent connections will be a lot quicker. :)

Some vehicles have windscreens with special coatings which prevent the satnav initialising with GPS satellites. If this is your problem, the only solution is to purchase an external antennae for your satnav. :(

Waiting for a valid gps signal

Make sure you are outdoors. Some buildings are well shielded due to their construction.

If you are not downloading the GPS Quickfix every week then it will take much longer for the unit to acquire satellites. Perhaps as much as five minutes.

If you are outside set in a destination and if you have not got satellites within a few minutes then drive a a few tens of yards and it should suddenly find satellites. Happens to my unit as well.

Unit will not acquire the satellite signs

FYI ....My Roadmate 760 would not aquire a signal, I went to diagnostic screen and found it was detecting/tracking 0/0 satellites. Held the plugged in unit out the window and within 10 seconds was tracking 7 satellites! Turned out my 1999 Olds Silhouette Van has a anti-glare filter inside the factory windshield that blocks GPS signals. My wifes 2001 Chevy Impala also has same type filter. Check your windshield, filter is visible inside glass to within about three inches of edges of glass. Worth a look.
