Gray screen i have a mac book and when i turn it on it goes to a gray screen and dont do anything else and i dont have the os x install disk to restart it

    Computer stopped and froze while downloading an upgrade. Now, it will not boot up. It stops at the gray screen with the apple logo - nothing more.

Use an install disk to repair the hard drive, verify permissions, repair permissions and such. Also try Disk Warrior which can sometimes repair problems that Apple's disk tools can't. If that doesn't work, reinstall OS X. If you don't have a disk go on eBay and buy them. Just make sure that your model is compatible with the set you get. Alternatively you could call Apple, which I believe sells them for about what eBay does, so that's an easy fix too.

"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Repair Disk on the external drive.
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac Symptoms

If you see a flashing question mark when you start your Mac, it's probably because it can't find the system software it needs to start up. Usually, all you have to do to get your Mac back up and running is remind it where its software is.
Resolution

If your computer starts up normally after a brief delay, you probably just need to reselect the startup disk in Startup Disk preferences. It's normal to see the flashing question mark when a startup disk has not been selected. In most cases, reselecting the startup disk is all that is required to resolve the issue.

Sometimes, your computer may not start beyond the flashing question mark.

Tip: If your computer has a gray screen (with no flashing question mark) startup issue, see Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup.

Check the mouse and keyboard

This issue might occur if a mouse or trackpad button is pressed during startup. Make sure the button isn't pressed.

If the issue persists, shut down your Mac with its power button, disconnect any external mouse and keyboard, then turn on your Mac with its power button. If the flashing question mark issue persists, reconnect the keyboard and mouse.

Additional steps

If your Mac still starts to a flashing question mark, follow the steps below. If any step resolves the issue, you don't need to continue to the next one.

  1. Select your Mac OS X startup disk with Startup Manager by restarting and holding the Option key. After your Mac starts up, restart again to verify that the flashing question mark does not appear.
  2. If the issue persists, insert your Mac OS X installation disc. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc.

    MacBook Air note: On a MacBook Air, there are two options for starting up from Mac OS X media: Either connect a MacBook Air SuperDrive to the MacBook Air via the USB port and restart the computer, holding down the C key during startup, or use Remote Install Mac OS X to startup from a system software DVD that's located on a partner computer. Once started up from Mac OS X media, skip to step 3.

  3. Restart the computer, then hold the C key during startup.
  4. From the Utilities menu, choose Disk Utility. Don't click Continue.
  5. Select your Mac OS X disk (named "Macintosh HD" by default) in the left side of the Disk Utility window.
  6. Click the First Aid tab.
  7. Click Repair Disk to verify and repair any issues with your Mac OS X startup disk.
  8. After repairing the disk, try to start up normally.

    Important: If Disk Utility finds issues it cannot repair, you may need to back up as much of your data as possible (or use Time Machine to back up to a different disk), then erase the disk and reinstall Mac OS X. You should back up important files and data before erasing a drive. Erasing deletes everything on the hard disk (including things on your desktop). Also, you can install Mac OS X onto an external disk, start from the external disk, and use Migration Assistant to transfer items from your usual internal Mac OS X startup disk to the external disk, then erase the internal disk and reinstall Mac OS X.
  9. If the issue persists, and Disk Utility didn't find any irreparable issues, quit Disk Utility, quit the Installer, select your disk when prompted, and restart.
  10. If the issue continues, reset PRAM. Note: After resetting PRAM, if the computer starts up normally, reselect the startup disk in the Startup Disk preferences.
  11. If none of these steps resolve the issue, start up from the Mac OS X Installation disc and reinstall Mac OS X.

My power book g4 will not start up it goes on with a white screen and the apple sign with the wheel spinning than it goes off

Please boot the system with a Mac OS X installation Media .Insert the installation media and power on the system and immediately press ' C ' key to boot it from Mac OS X installation disk.After few seconds the language selection option will appear .Click continue and then in the next screen see on top you will find "UTILITY" then click "DISK UTILITY" .Select the boot drive partition and try to repair the file permissions mentioned left hand side .If the permission repaired successfully then restart the system and check if it boots.If still you face the same issue then reboot the system with installation media again and repartition the harddrive .Install the os Freshly.The issue will get solved

MacBook won't start up.

If you have your Mac OS X Install disc, insert it into the drive.
Restart the computer and hold down "C" while booting.
Choose your language.
Select "Disk Utility" from the "Utilities" in the menu bar.
Select your Macbook's hard drive in the left sidebar.
Click the "First Aid" tab thats along the top of the viewer window.
Click "Verify Disk" (not verify disk permissions)
If this shows errors click "Repair Disk"
Once completed close the Disk Utility window.
Restart the computer.
If this fails to fix it as well then your next option would most likely be recovering your files from the macbook either by booting into target disk mode (hold down T at startup) and transferring them via a firewire cable, or removing the hard drive and hooking it up to another Mac to get the files. Then do a clean install of Mac OS X using your installation discs.

My screen is on but just have a small camera in the middle of the screen blinking.. G4 power book can you help?

I seen a blinking folder with a question mark in the middle in folder, in the middle of a display screen, but not a camera.

Either way, you are not able to access your main desktop so that is where I want to help.

A blinking folder with a ? in middle, is an indication that your bootable Mac OS X volume cannot be found.

If you do, I would first recommend you try this procedure first:
(PRAM Reset)

• Once your Mac is shutdown, you will need to perform what is called a PRAM reset (Parameter RAM)
• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously .

• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
• Now, hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the start up sound for the third time.
• Release the keys and allow the Powerbook G4 to start up.

Should neither of these processes work and you still boot up to a flashing ? folder, then your only recourse is to use your Mac OS X installation disc and perform an Archive and Install procedure.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR MAC BOOK PRO FROZEN AT THE START UP SCREEN ???

Get your Mac OS DVD out, restart the machine with the disk in your optical drive, and after you hear the famous mac chime, press and hold the C key while it starts. When you reach the install window, don't install but rather open the Disk Utilities App and run a verify of your hard disk, also repair permissions. Then restart as normal. This should get you back to operation.

I am not a tech guy so i hope this makes sense. i

Take your Mac OS disk (leopard or tiger, etc) and restart your mac with the disk in the drive. As soon as you hear the famous mac chime, press and hold the C key until it launches the OS on your Mac OS disk you inserted.
Once you get to the install screen, DON'T INSTALL OR DEINSTALL. Rather look at the top menu and launch the disk utilities application that you'll find in the list in the menu. Run a verify and repair disk, and then repair the permission as well.
Then do a restart. You should be back up.

Trouble shooting new os 10.4 tiger installation on mac pro

You sure you got the original gray label install discs for this computer? Sometimes people stick gray discs in with the computers and they are not specific for that model.  The Macbook Pro ships with Tiger 10.4.6
Borrow a black label Tiger retail disc from someone and install your OS that way.

when booting immediately after the first chime before the grey screen hold down keys (apple,option,p,r) allow the computer to restart if it still goes to that blank screen restart again and this time hold down only the (option) key or maybe (option,s) depending on model try option key first then select the main start up disk from the menu and click the arrow underneath
