SOURCE: Error message: Service error 5100 on my new Canon MP160 Printer

Error Code.........Description
5000 ...................Home position error
5100 ...................Carriage control error
5200 ...................Head temperature sensor error
5400 ...................Printer temperature sensor error
5600 ...................No cartridge error
5C00 ...................Purging operation error
5200 ...................Scanner cartridge error

As a technician, I have worked on tons of printers. This particular error had stumped me for a while, but I finally found the cause. As others had pointed out before, it can have alot to do with some obstruction in the print path, the gears, or ink on the clear plastic encoder strip. You're on the right track - I found the the purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) was not lubricated well enough from factory. If you lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps) the mechanism can now slide more freely, and the unit can park the head properly without giving you the dreaded head homing error 5100 (or E-2-2 on the LCD display) Keep in mind that this repair will probably require you to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism. There are two screws behind the printer, and two in front for each corrosponding side panel (the front screws are behind the grey front panel of the printer - open the top cover to see the clips which hold the front cover on) Hope this helps some of you out.
good luck (^_^)

SOURCE: error message inner cover is open canon pixma mp610 printer

Had the same problem myself but discovered that I had previously moved the inside flap down when I put the ink in. I moved this back into position and bingo! (If you make sure all the covers are closed then look into the printer where the paper exits you will see the flap that moves up and down, this must be in the up position)

How do I fix error code 1403 mg5420?

Try removing cartridge, turning printer off/on and installing the cartridge back in. Try this couple of times and if it doesn't work, replace the cartridge.1403 indicates 'not recognised' cartridge and there is no way to reset this condition.

You may have accidentally installed updated firmware in your printer, so it doesn't recognize the carts anymore. You may have to "reset" the chips on your carts.
If resetting the carts doesn't help, I'd suggest contacting the place you got the refillable carts.

I have a Canon Pixma MG5420. I would like to print index cards using the upper cassette but I can only get the printer to print from that cassette using photo printing software. Otherwise I can't access...

Try opening control panel>devices&printers. Set the paper feed to the upper feed as permanent. Then on printer itself make sure that paper type, size and feed is where you want it.

I have a canon mg5420 with a paper jam code 1311 but no paper in any the locations I check?

If all else fails try this:
(at your own risk)
1. Turn on the printer
2. Open the rear cover and remove the paper feeder there
3. Insert a sheet of paper from the rear (in the slot at where the paper feeder just was.
4. turn off the printer
The printers rolls will spin as it shuts down and it will pull in the paper, hopefully clearing the paper sensor.

This worked for my MG5420
