new memory was pc 3200 ddr 400 1 gb, purchased from officemax. computer is a few years old, upgraded memory just after purchase. has been working fine. upgraded home computer and the old 3000 was headed for my 5th wheel trailer

  • jwalshaw Apr 07, 2009

changed the 512 around, located the jumper and moved it to the open pin. removed battery, and tried the capacitive discharge. originial memory worked for a least 3 years, until yesterday when I plugged in the 1 gb. still getting the beeps and not starting. was thinking of calling dell but they want me to sign up again for support, my orginial year has expired. again thanks for all the help, my dell didn't like me fooling with it!

  • jwalshaw Apr 08, 2009

The old memory is back in, no luck with the battery removed. Not allowing me into the BIOS, just the same beep code. Nothing on the screen. Guess its time to call Dell or give it up. Thanks for the help!!

The memory is not compatible or not seated properly. Did it snap into place or is one side of it not in all the way?

Most likely cause is wrong memory chips being installed or memory not fully inserted into memory banks. In some cases I have purchased bad memory chips. In either case you should be able to reinstall the old memory and be back to running again.

Check owners manual for correct chips, I think they should be PC-3200 DDR DIMMS: type DDR SDRAM, Total memory that can be supported is 2GB. If you have two memory banks that would be 1GB for each memory slot.

also...In some cases with memory changes you may have to go into BIOS and accept the new
    memory configurations.

    This may help:

Memory modules are detected, but a memory configuration or compatibility error exists.

Ensure that no special memory module/memory connector placement requirements exist (see Specifications).

Verify that the memory modules that you are installing are compatible with your computer (see Specifications).

If the problem persists, see "Contacting Dell" in your Owner's Manual for instructions on obtaining technical assistance

Have you tried with old memory chips installed?

With the machine unplugged from the wall remove the battery from the motherboard. Then with the machine still unplugged press the On button for 30
seconds to dissipate any remaining electrical charge on the
motherboard. Then re-install the battery, plug the machine back into
the wall and see if it will boot normally.

I think hitting the "DEL" key when you power on the computer will take you to the BIOS setup screen.

When you make any hardware change on your computer you must change or accept the new settings in the BIOS setup.

NOTE: I don't have the manual for this type computer and I'm not sure if "DEL" key will get you to the BIOS setup, sometimes its F1 or F2 are some other key combination.

Let me know if this helps you get to the BIOS setup screens...

That could be a couple of different issues.

  • Memory may not be seated all the way. It should "snap" into place.
  • Make sure it's right kind of memory. The Dell Dimension 3000 takes 333MHz DDR SDRAM. Look on the chips to see if it says 333 or PC3200 anywhere.
  • The max memory for that machine is 1GB, so my guess is each memory card is probably 512MB max. Larger ones may not work
  • It's possible the memory is bad, replace it as last resort if nothing else fixes it.
Let me know if none of the above works.

  • Anonymous Apr 07, 2009

When reinstalled old memory, did you put it back in the same slots that it was originally in?

When you get the beeps, is there anything at all showing on the screen? If memory changes you may have to go into BIOS to accept the new memory, Save and exit.

  • Anonymous Apr 07, 2009

All the beep codes and lights do point to memory. If everything is back in it's original place then maybe something happened to the memory during replacement.

Maybe try swapping the memory in the slots. Not sure why this would make a difference, but you've definitely hit an odd situation.

On a side note: That 1GB memory module should work in there.

One more thing to try. Capacitive discharge. I've seen this fix some odd problems through the years. Unplug the power cord from the computer, hit the power button a couple of times, then plug it back up and see what happens.

Now that you have the original memory in place you need to locate the jumper for the CMOS and reset that to factory defaults. Usually that is a tiny black piece of plastic that is covering two adjacent pins with an empty pin next to it. Move it from the two pins it is covering so it covers the open pin, leaving a different pin open. Leave it this way for about 15 seconds, then move it back. Now try to reboot. If that does not work or you can't find the jumper you can take the battery out of the motherboard for a minute or two, sometimes that will also reset the CMOS.

If you can't get your new memory to work I would try changing to 512 MB instead of 1GB, then try a lower speed, and finally a different brand. Did you go to dell.com and put in your service tag to see exactly what memory works in the system?

Laptop beeps 7 times

Try link: http://blog.parts-people.com/2014/06/27/dell-inspiron-m501r-m5010-beep-codes-diagnostic-indicators-2/ How to identify beep codes: When a laptop or computer first powers on, it goes through an initial set of diagnostic tests to make sure vital components are preforming correctly. These tests are called POST or Power On Self Test. When a test fails, the user is notified via POST codes, Light codes, or Beep codes. For diagnosing Beep codes you need to:
  • Power on the laptop or restart it if it is already on.
  • Listen to the number of consecutive beeps when the computer begins to boot. Restarting the laptop may be necessary and should not harm the laptop at this time.

3 log beeps on power on

Gigabyte doesn't list 3 long beeps as an error code, so I'm not sure if you're actually getting 3 short beeps or maybe 1 long and 2 short or... But, for reference, Gigabyte's error code list is as follows (depending on whether you have an AWARD BIOS or an AMI):

(AWARD BIOS)
1 short beep: System normal
2 short beep: CMOS Error
1 long beep and 1 short beep: Memory error
1 long beep and 2 short beep: Graphic card error
1 long beep and 3 short beep: AGP error
1 long beep and 9 short beep: Memory Error
Continuous long beep: Memory not correctly installed
Continuous short beep: Power supply unit failed

(AMI BIOS)
1 short beep: Memory Error
2 short beep: Memory parity check error.
3 short beep: Basic memory 64K address check error
4 short beep: Real Time Clock malfunction .
5 short beep: CPU error
6 short beep: Keyboard error
7 short beep: CPU interruption error
8 short beep: Graphic card error
9 short beep: Memory error
10 short beep: CMOS error
11 short beep: CPU cache memory malfunction

It might not be a lot of help, but it's somewhere to start... and at least this way you'll know what to be listening for.

Inspiron 531s will not boot up, keeps beeping, saying it is in power save mode. How do I fix the problem

System Beep Codes The Inspironâ„¢ 531 / 531s system can emit a series of beeps during start-up if the display cannot show errors or problems. These series of beeps, called beep codes, identify various problems. One possible beep code consists of repetitive three short beeps. This beep code indicates the computer encountered a possible system board failure.
The series of beeps has a 3-second delay before it repeats. The series and delays continually loop until you press the power button.
Code Description Suggested Remedy 1 BIOS ROM checksum in progress or failure System board failure; covers BIOS corruption or ROM error 2 No memory modules detected
    1. If you have two or more memory modules installed, remove the modules, reinstall one module, and then restart the computer. If the computer starts normally, reinstall an additional module. Continue until you have identified a faulty module or reinstalled all modules without error.
    2. If available, install a good memory module of the same type into the computer.
    3. If the problem persists, contact Dell.
3 Chipset error (North and Southbridge chipset, DMA/IMR/Timer Error for Intel® platform); chipset error System board failure. Power LED is blinking amber. Time-Of-Day Clock test failure Gate A20 failure Super I/O chip failure Keyboard controller test failure 4 RAM read/write failure

    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos200/en/index.htm
the above link will allow you to download pdf versions or view HTML versions of the Dell manuals for your machine.

4 beeps is RAM read/write failure

if you recently installed new RAM (memory) you should check to be sure that it is compatible. If not, you might just have a loose memory stick.

just remove and re-install memory modules making certain to seat them firmly.

!!!! Very important ..before touching memory.. be sure to discharge any static from your body - by touching anything grounded (I usually leave my tower plugged into a grounded outlet and make sure the rocker switch to the for the power supply(the switch on the back of the computer) is turned off.

    Error signal ASRock P4VM800

When you open to you're bios menu, either at the top or at the bottom of the screen will be a name of you'e bios. In you're case the name is at the bottom of your bios menu. (American Megatrends Inc.). Or for short AMI You could search google for, AMI bios beep codes.
And you can click on this link, which shows what AMI say's about 3 beeps.
    http://www.bioscentral.com/beepcodes/amibeep.htm

You need to test you're memory. (Only if cleaning the memory has did not change the beep error beeps).
First remove you're memory & blow out the DIMM slots with canned air. Clean the copper on the memory with house hold alcohol on a lightly dampend cotton swab. (Let it dry), (Do not touch the copper with you're fingers. Re-install you're memory.
If you have more than one DIMM. Remove the bank farthest from the CPU & boot the PC. Did you hear the 3 beeps? Remove the the next bank & re-install the one you removed first in to the slot closest to the CPU. Boot the PC, again did you hear the 3 beeps?

If I can be of more service, just post back & let me know how thing go.

    Good Luck!
