My spiral hook attachment broke. I can't seem to find a place that sales just the attachment. Everyone that I've come across sales the entire unit only. Does anyone know where I can get a spiral hook attachment?

Accessing gearbox in Hobart N50 (older model)

Take the back cover off the motor and then there will be four nuts that hold on the back bearing cage of the motor. After removing that, you will find 7 large screws in beside the motor that remove the gearbox.

Hobart N-50 Mixer beater attachment spins but has no resistance

Sounds like the shear pin on the planetary shaft has sheared off. Has the mixer been subjected to a heavy load. Remove the planetary and see if the shear pin is intact otherwise you may have to open up the transmission.

How to find the age of a Hobart N50

Hi Anne. Call your nearest Hobart parts place. The parts guys will be able to tell you the age and which plant it was manufactured in in the USA. Another source is the hobartservice.com website, look for discontinued products under the food machines group, then select mixers and browse until you find the file that dates machines. One thing to watch for when buying is oil leakage that appears to come from the bottom of the stand. This indicates that the transmission grease is partially separating the oil out of it and it's leaking out of the rear bearing and dripping down. If the leak seems excessive, pass on the purchase. This drip could also indicate excessive wear on the bearings. Also run the mixer in all speeds, if is sounds like a tank approaching, it probably needs a rebuild.

New (old) N50 ML-4749

You should be able to purchase the manual. I know that Hobart abandoned that policy a few years back -- unless they re-instated it. Call Mother Hobart and ask. 937-332-3000

There is a few tricks to these units, it would be tough to convey here. But here goes...

Remove back cover. Loosen 6 or 7 screws around outside of motor windings. Thump the nose of the mixer downward to break the seal. Watch for spacer washers where shafts go into motor case. Remove spring. Remove idler. Remove shifting guide. Remove gear assy. Leave beveled gears in place if possible. Clean. Use Darina II grease. (20 oz) Clean and permatex "seal". Tighten mounting bolts. Adjust set screw at back of planetary. (Double set screw. The first one is to lock the adjustment.) Test in 1st and then 3rd while turning the set screw. You just make it quiet for a proper adjustment.

Good luck -- Mike

Hobart N50 Tripped

The reset button is to protect over amping the motor. The N-50 is not a very strong unit, (commercially), but you won't break a gear. If you overload the unit, you'll either trip the overload (reset button), or you will break the taper pin that attaches the planetary to the center shaft.

If you're looking for a small commercial unit, and you're in the US, look into the 10 qt Precision Mixer.
