KDL-32M4000 - squiggly broken (dotted) line on top of non HD chls

Hi. A friend of mine as well as me just bought the same TV: a KDL-32M4000. When in channels that are NOT broadcast in HD, or when viewing channels not in the HD range of channels, we both get a squiggly line on the top of the screen. Above the picture. It is a broken (or dotted white) line that flicks and distracts from the picture. The only way to remove it is to change the screen setting to zoom wide and this is not something that I want to do.

Is this normal?

Thanks
Fred

SOURCE: Sony Bravia - Picture in ZOOm Mode

I corrected mine by adjusting my cable settings. It had been set to "zoom" / "wide" mode. I reset to "normal" and now channels look fine again.

SOURCE: cannot fill screen with normal picture size setting

assuming you all have comcast and using an hdmi cable
first access menu (hit it twice) and go to set picture format, choose passthrough....or in your case auto hdmi

then turn box off, press guide and info on the front of the box, proceed through the setup, advanced is more in depth..lol...

select 1080, 720, and then either the standard or widescreen 480s to your liking.....

voila....

now check your tv settings to accommodate

SOURCE: Normal Picture Mode Not Available With Cox HD-DVR (Motorola DCH3416) and HDMI Cable

With an HDMI cable connected, the cable box determines the picture size. The settings on the cable box must be changed in order for you to get the correct picture size. I have some experience with Motorola cable boxes; usually to access the settings you turn the box OFF and then press the menu or settings button on the box to bring up the display menu. Hope this helps!

SOURCE: Wide screen mode won't go back to "normal".

Was exactly what you said. The cable box settings were in wide mode. Couldn't figure it out at all. Funny thing was too.. on my cable box remote, the button under the #9 button is the # button.. it doesn't say zoom at all.. but it totally controls the zoom.

So thanks for that.. AND thanks for saying "under the #9 on the cable remote" instead of just saying .. the zoom button.

Thanks again!!!

You likely have a bad optical block. Sony was supplying the optical block as a warranty repair until June of this year, but that warranty has expired.
